There’s no mistaking this classic apéritif, from the vibrant melted lipstick-red color to the distinctive signature bitter finish, clean, clear and strong. It’s high, bitter and faintly floral-fruity in scent. Americanos and Negronis wouldn’t be the same without this jewel-like spirit.

Although Campari is classified in the U.S. as a liqueur, in Italy, it’s classed as a “bitter apéritif”. Ruby red in color, this spirit brings aromas of fresh ginger, orange zest, and a host of other spices. The body is medium, and the palate is slightly bitter but not overpoweringly so. Here we find a well-integrated mix of herbs, fruits and spices. The finish is clean and dry.

Light red color. Dark berries and spice on the nose. A smooth attack leads to a somewhat sweet, medium-to full-bodied palate with ripe and tart black cherry and dark fruit flavors that give way to a barrage of extremely bitter herb and fruit pit elements that dominate the back palate and linger as the fruity sweetness dissipates. A complex and dynamic aperitif that could use a mixing element to calm down the bitterness.

The nosing passes find earthy/woodsy scents of brambles/vines, moss, forest floor and stones. The palate entry owns a unique tree bark-like taste that’s oddly attractive; the midpalate stage features pungent flavors of ashes, roots, quinine, honey, citrus peels and earth.

Strawberry/cherry aromas, with a ouch of floral roses in the hot nose. A touch of bitter orange, with lemon, wet leaves, numbing licorice and herbs and bark flavors; well-balanced finish, with clean cherry flavors.

The neon/cherry red color reminds me of cherry Kool-Aid; superb clarity. The opening whiffs immediately are treated to amazingly earthy/woodsy scents that could only be described as brambles/vines, moss, forest floor, and stones; further aeration, in this case, doesn’t alter the direction of the aroma. The palate entry owns a unique tree bark-like taste that’s oddly attractive to me; the midpalate stage features pungent flavors of ashes, roots, quinine, honey, citrus peels, and earth. I didn’t fully appreciate bitters when I first reviewed this ubiquitous brand back in 1995. I’ve turned a corner since then and have come to admire their special place in the international spirits symphony.

Ruby red in color with aromas and flavors of sandalwood, herbs, mints, and citrus. Classic bitter flavors with a lingering finish of grapefruit peel.
