Opening nosing passes detect subtle toasty, charcoal aromas. Entry is off-dry to sweet and properly oily; sweet graininess dominates the midpalate. Aftertaste is long, bittersweet and delectably oily. Fashioned more in the plump, sweet style of Holland than eastern Europe (thick, hearty) or Scandinavia (light, flowery).

With touches of almond sweetness and a faint citrusy note on the smooth finish, this vodka made from corn and rye will please those seeking a pure, neutral canvas, with just enough nuance to keep things interesting.

This soft, gin-like vodka has juniper and coriander notes and a brisk, lightly sweet finish. Serve on the rocks, or shaken into a well-chilled martini.

Notes: This vodka is produced in “The Still on the Hill”, in the Napa Area, water, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proof for bottling. Thirteen generations of distillers, the Karakasevic Family have a line longer than the Beams (the only other family to come close).
Appearance: Crystal clear, no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a thin clear coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance.
Taste: Plump grain body slide past the tongue and a wonderful warm finish. Touch of corn sweetness with the higher notes from a good wheat grain. Slightly oily and wonderfully thick body but not too heavy- this is the kind of body that cheaper vodkas strive for by doping with sugar, glycerin, or vanilla but this vodka comes by it honestly. Unlike a number of other vodkas this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

Brandy and whiskey traditionalists will be stunned to see a vodka — of all spirits — in my top ten, but to hell with them. Napa Valley distillers Miles and Marko Karakasevic have created an American masterpiece in Charbay. Along with Pearl and Hangar One, Charbay has raised the bar not only for North American distillers but for all the world’s vodka distillers. If you haven’t tasted Charbay, your life has a huge hole in it.
