This 2003, grown on a mixture of chalk, limestone, clay, rocks and sand, shows incredible finesse for the vintage. Initially hidden behind dense tannins, it comes alive with air, a steady brightness building from the cool middle of the wine. Flavors of wild blackberries and dried herbs become more detailed over time, acting like agents of complexity over the wine’s supple, juicy texture. Probably best at 10 years from the vintage , Paleo is proof that Le Macchiole is on to something with cabernet franc in Bolgheri.

A full-throttle red, with lots of plum, berry and vanilla character and Indian spices underneath. Full, silky, wild and long. Cabernet Franc. Best after 2008.

Moderately saturated ruby. Cassis, plum and milk chocolate on the nose, lifted by a floral perfume. Sweet, dense and youthfully unevolved, with classic cabernet flavors of dark berries, graphite, and a touch of cedar. Broadens out impressively on the back end and shows increasing sweetness of fruit with extended aeration. This is a very supple version of Paleo; with less of the acid backbone of other recent vintages, it boasts a softer, if simpler, appeal.

Even though the extreme heat has robbed the 2003 Paleo (100% Cabernet Franc) of some its varietal aromatics it is unquestionably one of the vintage’s successes. Plump and juicy, it presents attractive suggestions of super-ripe dark fruit, sweet toasted oak and minerals with outstanding length and plenty of personality. Over the last few months this wine has continued to improve, integrating its tannins and gaining greater focus. It should drink well relatively early. Anticipated maturity: 2007–2015.
