The rich, buttery nose has strong hints of raisins and honey. The big, soft body presents a complex, yet very easy palate with a veil of flavors that includes vanilla, honey, oranges, sweet butter and a well-balanced backdrop of old leather and just a hint of spice. The finish is long, warm and very smooth.

90–95 pts.: September, 2002

Sublimely sweet, ambrosial bouquet that features vanilla, chocolate fudge, buttermilk and hazelnut. On the palate, it’s impeccably balanced; rich, mature flavors of tobacco leaves, caramel, red fruit and pine come together elegantly on the tongue. Aftertaste offers dark caramel and sweet pipe smoke.

90–95 pts.: 12/1/2007

The base aroma is buttered corn-on-the-cob with aeration bringing additional scents of vanilla and cinnamon. The palate entry showcases sweet breakfast cereal grain; at midpalate the corn dominates so thoroughly that you know that this could only be one of the best straight bourbons from Kentucky. Ends spirity and heated. One of America’s benchmark spirits.

Radiant russet color. Sublime, sweet bouquet emits scents of fruit, vanilla, chocolate fudge, buttermilk and hazelnut; an impeccably balanced, state-of-the-art Bourbon bouquet. Displays mature tastes of shredded tobacco, caramel, fruit and pine. The smooth, dry and sinewy finish is luscious. Hands down, the finest bargain in American spirits.

Amber, with a deep copper cast. Medium-bodied. Minerals, grain (malt), dried peach. Tight, lean texture. Pungent and intense on the palate, carrying a rich earthy note coupled with spicy wood nuances. Retains a vibrant chalky finish.

A little spicier than the norm but those fruit and honey strands are tightly bound; a touch of lactose from the oak surprises; the wax is confined not just to the seal as a wonderful coating encrusts every solitary tastebud. A wonderful honey theme plays alongside the busy wheat-induced spices.

The brilliant amber/topaz color shines under the examination lamp; excellent purity. The initial blast of aroma is all buttered corn-on-the-cob mixed with sugar maple; aeration brings out deeper spice, especially vanilla and cinnamon, while not forgetting for a nanosecond the corn base. The palate entry showcases the sweet breakfast cereal grain against the pristine distillate; at the midpalate stage, there’s a defining moment for this whisky wherein the corn leaps across the footlights and dominates so thoroughly that you just know that this could be nothing other than one of the best straight bourbons from Kentucky. Ends spirity and heated.

One of the original high-quality bourbons and still one of the best, paved the way for the red-hot premiums of today. It is an elegant and exquisitely balanced spirit, with concentrated flavors of caramel, smoke and dried fruits.
