This wine shows amazing complexity, subtle richness, layers of flavor and an ultrasmooth texture. A foundation of fruit flavor is very solid, and the acidity is firm and refreshing. The mouthfeel is plush and the finish lingers, making it a grand wine for a special occasion.

This latest edition… is the best yet.

This lovely Mendocino sparkler, crafted from two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir, has lilting apple and honey aromas buoyed by a thick head of mousse. There is a pleasing follow-through from aroma to flavor and a core of ripe apple. Dry, soft with a long finish, this is a hard-to-resist food-friendly wine ready to pair widely.

Here’s a polished, elegant wine, very dry, with delicate flavors of citrus rind, bread dough and yeast, toast and vanilla. It has a lightness and charm on the palate that make it irresistible.

Pale straw appearance. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Roasted coffee, smoke, citrus fruits. Rich, roasted aromas have a smoky accent. Gernerous smoky citrus flavors expand on the palate and persist through the finish. Showing nice development.

Great price for a brut this classically structured. Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it’s dry and crisp, with a fine mousse that gives it a creamy smooth mouthfeel. The pineapple, raspberry and vanilla flavors are delicious.

This is a pale, dry sparkling wine with a robust pinot noir scent. The yeastiness leaves an impression of smoky richness, with a stony mineral note. Delicious with wood-roasted oysters.

A delicious Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend from coolly grown Mendocino grapes that is equal parts golden apple and honey in both aroma and flavor. Creamy from full malolactic fermentation, this sparkler is full-bodied and plenty fruity with a caramel, vanilla tone on the finish. Will pair well with creamy, full-bodied foods.

Bright aromas of green apple and lime lead to vibrant, layered flavors of citrus, anise and creamy vanilla. Drink now.

A delightfully racy sparkler, with tart apple and floral anise aromas leading to zesty lime and lemon flavors, presenting accents of cinnamon and spicy ginger. Drink now. 25,000 cases made.

Pretty and clear, this Brut balances complex lemon and toast with a slight caramel character on the nose. The wine really shines on the palate, where rich berry character comes through. Quite dry, with persistent flavors. John Scharffenberger has taken this winery a long way with the infusion of capital from the French firm of Lanson/Pommery. He continues his strong showing in the Competition with three silver medals this year.

Medium light body. Medium acid and fruit. Honey, flowers, lemons, herbs. Very fine and elegant, nicely balanced, with a mouth- watering citrus twist. Quite similar to French Champagne.

Soft and fresh, with easygoing flavors of creamy lemon, spice and fresh yeast rolls. Drink now.

88 pts. : May/Jun 1997

Very active, pinpoint bubbles; toast and wood dominate the nose; flavors of toast, butter and fresh apples; citrus notes on a long, balanced close; clean; attractive value.

87 pts. : December 31, 1996

Strikes a nice balance of ripe pear, spice, apple and creamy vanilla flavors. Elegant and spicy on the finish.

87 pts. : December 1, 2007

Grapey and simple, this wine melds a touch of cherry with pale apple flavors, finishing warm. Chill it for poached prawns.

87 pts. : November 30, 1997

Emits toast and yeast on the nose, but the fruit has a bit of a green edge. Still, it has pleasant nut, fig and citrus qualities.

87 pts.: May/Jun 2012

Light, bright gold. Green apple and quinine on the citrus-accented nose. Very dry and nervy on the palate, which offers taut lemon and orchard fruit flavors and a hint of bitter herbs. Slightly pinched on the finish but there's good focus and cut here. This bubbly has a low 2.95 pH, which no doubt contributes to its racy character.

87 pts. : December 15, 2005

Distinctive for its baked pear, orange zest and spice notes with crisp apple and lemon flavors blended nicely, adding richness on the finish. Drink now.

85 pts. : December 1, 2005

Toasty and clean, this has a nutty, straw-like scent and a soft texture. Serve it with baked brie or baked ham with apples.

…has a perfume of citrus and vanilla, nuanced with peach and pear. The grapefruit, green apple and peach flavors are very clean, fresh and flavorful.

Never objectionable… Scharffenberger’s Brut is lean at the center with moderate richness, derived from time on the yeasts pulling it back into focus. Mouth-filling with its bubbles but slightly hard in feel and acidy at the finish, this wine needs a service with tangy shellfish dishes to show at its best.

Subtlety more than potency is the message here, and wine’s lean, crisp-edged styling places it squarely amongst those wines that will show best on their own or with the lightest foods. Quiet, but mildly creamy in scent, the wine shows a foamy mousse with plenty of tiny bubbles that sustain nicely, and its crisp, relatively dry flavors carry under- played notes of minerals and green apples that linger in a tart, palate-cleansing finish.
