Tempranillo
Top regions producing this wine: |
Tempranillo is for Spain what Cabernet is for Napa Valley. Tempranillo is the backbone for the red wines of Rioja although it is often blended with Garnacha, Graciano, Carinena (or Mazuelo) to add complexity. It also plays a large role in Ribera del Duero, where it is known as “Tinto Fino”, and in Toro, where it is called “Tinta de Toro”. In these regions the grape is usually bottled on its’ own. It is not uncommon to find wines from this region that are from 80-to-100 year-old-plus vines selling for only $15. Quite the bargain! In Portugal, where the grape is known locally as Tinta Roriz, it is used extensively in the production of Port wines. Interest in this red grape has led to plantings in Argentina, France, and in the U.S., where there are small plantings in California, the Pacific Northwest, and even suitable climates in Arizona, Texas, and Colorado. |
