This is a deep, dark, intense wine full of black fruit aromas, baking spices and espresso. On the palate it exhibits flavors of blackberry compote, licorice and mocha. It is full bodied and has creamy, round textures that give it a long, lingering finish.

Critical Acclaim

SP90 Wine Spectator Dec 31, 2017

"A big, broad-shouldered effort, with a dense mix of flavors framed by sturdy tannins. Offers layers of dark berry, cedar, spice and graphite nuances. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 8,091 cases made." (90 pts.)

WE91 Wine Enthusiast 12/1/2017

"This is a successful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, with smaller amounts of Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Black fruit, baking spice and chocolate flavors commingle in a full-bodied package that’s rich, round and rewarding, with plenty of length." (91 pts.)

RP94 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Oct 2016

"The 2013 Proprietary Red from Bootleg is a major sleeper of not only the vintage, but in its entire concept. There are just over 8,000 cases of this wine, which has been culled from KJ vineyards on Atlas Peak, Oakville, Mt. Veeder, Rutherford and Spring Mountain. The wine is a blend of 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Petite Sirah, 21% Zinfandel, 12% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot. That’s like throwing in the entire kitchen sink, but the result is a stunningly delicious, complex, big-time, sexy style of wine with a deep, opaque purple color, a beautiful nose of blackberries and blueberries, with some lavender Provençal herbs, licorice and a touch of espresso. The wine has a fabulous texture, a plush, full-bodied mouthfeel, and beautiful purity and depth. It’s something that could only be made in California, given the blend, but it is off-the-charts in terms of its hedonistic appeal. At the same time, it is complex enough to satisfy the intellectual senses as well. Drink it over the next 5–6 years. A big-time winner." (94 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
