Wine Grapes

Primary Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon | All Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

From the Producer

The 2013 vintage shows incredible complexity with plum, cassis, sage, dried savory herbs, cured meat, wet slate, and tangerine peel. On the palate, the wine is precise and focused. Full bodied, yet light and lively with plum, blackberry, hints of ginger and nutmeg, and fine grained tannins. The Rutherford “dust” shows in the cocoa powder textured tannins supporting a long rich layered finish. A pleasure now but will age gracefully through 2030.

Critical Acclaim

VN96 Vinous Dec 2014

"Dana’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard possesses remarkable structure and density, especially within the context of the year. Firm yet well-integrated tannins give the wine much of its energy, tension and focus. Black cherry jam, graphite, smoke and tobacco add nuance as the wine opens up in the glass. Far from an easygoing 2012, the Helms is going to need time to fully come together. There is so much to look forward to here. This is the first vintage since 2008 that was vinified in wood uprights, as was originally intended. The intervening vintages have been much shorter, so they were done in barrel. The 2012 impresses for its balance of fruit, acidity and tannin." (96 pts.)

SP94 Wine Spectator Oct 31, 2015

"Dense and pleasantly earthy, with an edge of loamy earth and crushed rock minerality cutting through the core of currant, blackberry and mocha before the dense, earthy tannins fold in. The finish is long and engaging. Drink now through 2030. 284 cases made." (94 pts.)

RP96 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Oct 2014

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rutherford AVA, has a dense black cherry and blackcurrant-scented nose with graphite and forest floor notes, beautiful purity, full-bodied mouthfeel and super-richness and power, but elegant and complex. This is classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and should age beautifully for 20–25 years." (96 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
