Critical Acclaim

JD97 Jeb Dunnuck 12/21/2021

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is more supple and elegant, with terrific up-front charm and complexity already present. Revealing a deep purple color, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, with classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon notes of cassis, leafy herbs, flowers, and lead pencil. The tannins are ripe and polished, it has terrific overall balance as well as remarkable freshness, and it’s just a brilliant 2018 you’ll love to have in the cellar. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 20–25." (97 pts.)

RP95+ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 27th Nov 2019

"A barrel sample of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is opaque purple-black colored with a beautiful perfume of bold black currants, Black Forest cake and aniseed with candied violets, ripe red and black plums and rose hip tea notions plus a waft of forest floor. The full-bodied palate is a little closed and tightly wound with elegant, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant." (95–97+ pts.)

SP95 Wine Spectator Oct 31, 2021

"Rich and ripe, with a caressing edge to its plum paste and cassis core, while melted red licorice, red tea and iron notes add range and length through the fine-grained finish. Not shy on stuffing, but there’s a nice sense of refinement to the structure, which lets the fruit play out nicely. Best from 2022 through 2037. 5,750 cases made." (95 pts.)

VN92 Vinous Jan 2022

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is a big, potent wine packed with black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol. Readers will find a plush, dense Cabernet built on volume and huge fruit. Floral notes appear with a bit of coaxing, adding lift. The Kathryn Hall is a blend taken from a number of sites, but built on a core from Sacrashe." (92 pts.)

VN92+ Vinous Jan 2020

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is bright, punchy and full of the energy that is a signature of the best vintages of this wine. Lavender, spice, mint and dark red fruit all grace this mid-weight, vibrant Cabernet. As always, the Kathryn Hall is made mostly from the estate Sacrashe vineyard in the hills above Rutherford." (92–94 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
