Wine Grapes

Primary Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon | All Grapes: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot

From the Producer

Petit Verdot, even in the small quantities present in this wine, exudes its signature textural density and floral nose of purple and blue flowers that complement Cabernet’s macerated red and blue fruit so well. Cassis, graphite and crushed rock follow through on the palate, with a vibrant, cherry cola tone that rings in the finish. The fruit for this wine was harvested from predominantly young vines, and their youthful energy resonates on the palate. It is medium in weight with a supple, juicy core of blackberries that is lifted by hints of red licorice and spice. There is an expansiveness on the finish as the tannins coat the palate. The tannins themselves are very dusty, like a cherry-flavored talcum powder.

Critical Acclaim

VN92 Vinous Dec 2016

"Larkmead’s 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very pretty, understated wine. Bright red stone fruit, floral notes and spice give the 2014 its refreshing, vibrant personality. The fruit is nicely pushed forward, but the 2014 is light on its feet and gracious, especially for a Calistoga Cabernet. Even so, this is a relatively laid-back style built on finesse more than power." (92 pts.)

RP93 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Oct 2016

"The 2014 “White Label” red wines include the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which is a beauty. An elegant, Pauillac-style wine with notes of chocolate, cedar wood, fruitcake, unsmoked cigar tobacco and underbrush, it is dense, full-bodied and rich. It is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot aged 19 months in 75% new French oak. There are 2,705 cases of this wine, which finished at 14.7% natural alcohol. It should drink well for 20–25 years, but there’s no reason to defer your gratification." (93 pts.)

VN90+ Vinous Oct 2015

"A wine of superb purity, the 2014 takes the estate’s entry-level Cabernet Sauvignon (white label) to another level. Lavender, rose petal, mint and a host of dark red and bluish hued fruit grace the finish. Today, the 2014 speaks to finesse above all else. It is also more complete than the 2013, much of that because it was made after the division of parcels and wines in the broader range. What a gorgeous wine this is." (90–93 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).
