From the Producer

The highly anticipated release of the newest wine in our portfolio, “Dr. Olmo” pays homage to Dr. Harold P. Olmo, a UC Davis professor who conducted clonal trials on Larkmead’s property in the 1940’s and 50’s. Dr. Olmo took a selection of Cabernet from those Larkmead trials and propagated them at the Oakville Station; the “Oakville clones” as they have become to be known built the Napa wine industry in the 1960’s. Fifty percent of the grapes grown for this new wine are planted on the site in which Dr. Olmo has his clonoal vines planted. The 100% gravel soils where these vines are planted help produce a wine with some of the most intense Larkmead aroma and flavor profiles. Heady aromas of viiolets, blue fruit and graphite coupled with dusty, crushed rock and red cherry sweetness give this wine an ethereal bouquet. On entry into the mouth, the palate follows the nose but almost immediately the flavors draw back down to earth and are blended into a lean, but muscular, compact core. With time in the glass, the flavors darken as blueberries become blackberries and red cherry becomes black cherry. In the mouth, the tannins escape the core and dust the outer rim of the palate with sour, morello cherry notes.

Critical Acclaim

SP90 Wine Spectator Nov 30, 2016

"Bold and assertive, generous and supple, with a mix of loamy earth, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and underbrush flavors. A powerful yet refined expression best served by short-term cellaring. Best from 2020 through 2030. 1,635 cases made." (90 pts.)

JS96 JamesSuckling.com Saturday, January 16, 2016

"Intense aromas of blackberry, tar and wet earth follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Bark and cigar box undertones. A solid and powerful red yet balanced and poised. Give it two or three years of bottle age after release to soften." (96 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
