Chateauneuf on a Budget

Chateauneuf on a Budget | WineMadeEasy.com

France's Chateauneuf du Pape appellation is celebrated by wine enthusiasts for its bold, Grenache-led red blends. The appellation's name translates literally to "The Pope's new castle," a nod to when the papacy was relocated for a time to the town of Avignon, France in the 1300s. These wines are delicious now, but put a few of these aside as they will take on added depth and complexity in the future. Check out these selections, all under $50, and more at WineMadeEasy.com

  1. Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57424

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Deep, shimmering ruby. Powerful red and dark berry scents are complemented by exotic spice, garrigue and floral nuances. Sappy and densely packed, offering juicy raspberry, cherry preserve, licorice and fruitcake flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Gently chewy tannins build steadily on an impressively long, penetrating finish that leaves behind lavender and juicy cherry notes.

Dark and winey, with waves of ganache, steeped plum, blackberry reduction and melted black licorice rolling through. The finish is scored with warm earth and smoldering tobacco notes, showing ample grip for the cellar. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarèse and Cinsault. Best from 2023 through 2036. 18,300 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

The base wine, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape has a healthy ruby/purple color to go with its classic Southern Rhône notes of ripe red and black fruits, lots of earthy garrigue, some ground pepper, and a touch of minerality. All this carries over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a great mid-palate and sweet tannins. It certainly shows the upfront, charming style of the vintage, but I love its mid-palate, it’s beautifully balanced, and is just a seriously classy wine from this estate, which deserves more recognition today. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57392

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Quite different than the base cuvée (which isn’t always the case), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Girard is a special blend that usually includes more Mourvèdre. Lots of red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, and spice dominate the bouquet, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied and brings lots of fruit and richness, yet it stays balanced, light on its feet, and a joy to drink. Drink it over the coming 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58398

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
A captivating red, with cherry, incense, red tea, anise and fresh raspberry flavors that show density and polish on the palate, with a subtle note of apple wood smoke in the background. Reveals graphite shavings that give the palate a firming edge, with good energy through the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2032. 1,600 cases made, 280 cases imported. Very flattering to taste, even at this early stage, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape les Olivets boasts layered, nuanced aromas of fresh flowers and ripe raspberries. Full-bodied and rich, yet silky, this blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Cinsault and 10% Syrah finishes long, with just a touch of warmth. It looks like a delicious CdP for early drinking. (Joe Czerwinski)

  5. St. Antonin Châteauneuf du Pape

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58292

    JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, which is still resting in foudre, is primarily Grenache from the sandy portion of the La Crau lieu-dit (although it now also includes grapes from a new parcel in the northern part of the appellation). Kirsch, flowers, spice, and peppery garrigue notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, nicely structured 2020 that’s going to benefit from 2–3 years of bottle age. It’s clearly an outstanding bottle of wine in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Also pure Southern Rhône goodness, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has classy notes of red and blue fruits, candied orange, flowers, peppery garrigue, and loads of Asian spices. Beautifully textured, silky, and elegant on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, a notable sense of freshness, and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
