Chateauneuf on a budget

Chateauneuf on a budget | WineMadeEasy.com

There is still value to be had in the Southern Rhone in Châteauneuf-du-Pape of all places. Drinkable now, but put a few of these wines aside as they will take on added depth and complexity in the future, without breaking the bank.

  1. Domaine Roger Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galets de la Berthaude

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#54992

    RP93+93+? pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape les Galets de la Berthaude delivers more concentration than Perrin’s regular bottling, sourced from older vines in Bois Lauzon and Cabrières. It’s a tank-aged blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre that offers up scents of ripe raspberries and strawberries, with just a hint of garrigue. Full-bodied in the mouth, it’s rich and concentrated, finishing long and silky, but also quite tannic. Give it a few years to mellow, and drink it through 2040. (Joe Czerwinski)

A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, raised in stainless steel and concrete, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Maison La Berthaude Tradition reveals a healthy ruby/purple color as well as complex, traditional notes of blackberries, peppery garrigue, new saddle leather, and dried flowers. With medium to full-bodied richness, notable purity of fruit, and silky tannins, it’s a charming, balanced, outstanding Châteauneuf du Pape in the making.

Brilliant ruby-red. Displays aromas of raspberry, cherry, pungent flowers and herbs that are sharpened by a spicy flourish. Energetic red and dark berry flavors are nicely concentrated and open-knit. The cherry note repeats on a long, supple finish that’s framed by harmonious tannins.

  2. Élisabeth Chambellan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vielles Vignes

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55482

Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes Elisabeth Chambellan ranks with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Based on 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, brought up in a mix of tank and foudre, it has ample red and blue fruits as well as sappy green herbs, garrigue, pepper, and sandalwood. As with the base cuvée, it has a wonderful sense of freshness, medium to full-bodied richness, and a pure, balanced, lengthy style that’s a joy to drink.

Deep ruby-red. Vibrant, spice-tinged red and blue fruit, exotic spice and floral qualities on the perfumed nose. Juicy raspberry, boysenberry and cherry cola flavors show an appealing blend of depth and energy and a spicy flourish on the back half. Closes very long and subtly chewy, with repeating florality and sneaky, well-judged tannins.
