Super Tuscans

Super Tuscans | WineMadeEasy.com

The term "Super Tuscan" is used to describe wines from Tuscany that were augmented, or even entirely made from non-indigenous Italian grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even Syrah and Cabernet Franc became stars in the warmth of Tuscan vineyards.

The other thing "super" about our featured wines is the quality in a category where wines can easily command three-figure price-points. These you will find much more wallet-friendly. As the weather turns cooler these wines will ideally pair with roasts, steaks, hearty bolognese and "Sunday sauce."

Montepeloso A Quo

2021 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59119

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Jun 2023
Made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller percentages of Malvasia Nera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet, the 2021 A Quo offers intense fragrances that span from blackberry to dark rose—like one of those deep purple blooms you might see at a specialized florist. It is densely textured with a solid structure. A Quo is a wine of exceptional value, with 73,000 bottles on the market. (Monica Larner)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2021 A Quo is a fabulous introduction to these wines. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2021 offers up an exciting mix of red fruit, blood orange, rose petal, mint and cinnamon. Montepeloso’s entry-level estate offering is a winner. (Antonio Galloni)

Tenuta Degli Dei Cavalli

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 60156

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
Here is a red with a solid palate of red berries, crushed stone and fresh flowers. Full-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that are soft and relaxed. The fruit character is complex with some fresh mushrooms and rose petals to the dark fruit. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2022. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2021
The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length. Production is about 16,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2020 Lagone is a very pleasant Maremma red. Succulent cherry/plum fruit, spice, dried herbs, leather, menthol and rose petals are front and center. Medium in body and quite open, the 2020 is a charmer. Drink it over the next few years. (Antonio Galloni)
