Super Tuscans

Super Tuscans | WineMadeEasy.com

The term "Super Tuscan" is used to describe wines from Tuscany that were augmented, or even entirely made from non-indigenous Italian grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even Syrah and Cabernet Franc became stars in the warmth of Tuscan vineyards. The other thing "super" about our featured wines is the quality in a category where wines can easily command three-figure price-points. These you will find much more wallet-friendly. As the weather turns cooler these wines will ideally pair with roasts, steaks and hearty bolognese sauces.

  1. Le Volte dell’Ornellaia

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#57774

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
Attractive aromas of blue fruit with slate and black-licorice character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and an orange-peel undertone. Wet earth, some fresh sage and rosemary, too. I like the Mediterranean flavors in this vintage. Drink or hold.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th May 2022
A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Ornellaia 2020 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia shows medium darkness and texture followed by a very primary and fruit-forward bouquet. There is a generous display of cherry, cassis and wild plum. On second nose, this easy and straightforward Tuscan blend reveals hints of spice, cardamon and polished river stone. In a hot vintage like this, the wine comes together nicely and rather effortlessly. (Monica Larner)

This balanced red is laced with black cherry, blackberry, violet and spice flavors. Concentrated and juicy, leaving a lining of dusty tannins on the long finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2028. 12,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2020 Le Volte Dell’Ornellaia is a juicy, forward blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese that’s aged in a mix of concrete and oak. It’s one heck of a delicious bistro wine and is loaded with ripe redcurrants, strawberry, tobacco, and cedary herb aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, this plump, round, mouth-filling beauty is ideal for near-term drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jul 2022
Here’s a quality, easy-to-drink blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Varvàra is integrated and smooth with no rough spots. Black fruit, pressed rose, earth and spice are carefully woven together. All elements are in place, and the wine is available at a very attractive price point. (Monica Larner)

A linear and vivd red with black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Fresh flowers, too. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a bright finish. Give it a year or two, but already very pretty. Drink or hold.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022

  3. Argiano Non Confunditur

    Rosso Toscano
    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56724

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021
Dark berries with walnuts, hazelnuts and white pepper on the nose, following through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a chewy yet refined finish. Needs two or three years to come together. Drink after 2023.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Vibrant yet silky, boasting black cherry, blackberry, violet and iron flavors. The iron fist emerges by way of the firm tannins, and this finishes with a long aftertaste of fruit and dried herbs. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2030. 7,920 cases made.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The zesty 2019 Non Confunditur wafts up with a darkly alluring yet also wonderfully fresh bouquet, as blackberries and currants give way to rubbed sage and crushed ashen stone. This is silky-smooth and soothing, casting a polished display of black and red berries across the palate, as mineral-driven tension forms toward the close. Sweet tannins create a sensation of youthful poise, yet they don’t get in the way of the primary fruits that saturate throughout the long finish. Non Confunditur is refined in second and third-pass barriques and tonneaux, and it is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon along with 20% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese.

  5. Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#57192

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2021
I tasted the Guado al Tasso 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Il Bruciato from barrel, but the wine will hit the market in September of this year. Compared to the previous vintage, this edition is richer and slightly denser with nicely concentrated fruit. That extra textural support is a characteristic of this fortunate vintage. This accessible blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah offers tight mineral notes, toasted spice, almond and lots of dark, luscious fruit. To the palate, the wine exhibits softly caressing tannins.

  6. Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56146

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Il Carbonaione is one of the most elegant editions of this flagship wine I can remember tasting. Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined. The fruit was picked a week later than originally planned because of a family emergency. That results in an exotic Carbonaione that is beguiling but not at all heavy. I can’t wait to see how it ages.

  7. Trinoro Le Cupole

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58182

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2020 Le Cupole is a rich, flavorful wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, espresso, incense and chocolate are front and center. There’s not much subtlety here, but then again I am not sure that is the goal, either. This flamboyant red will be a joy to drink right out of the gate. (Antonio Galloni)
