Critical Acclaim

RP95 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 26th Feb 2021

"Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga is deep garnet-purple colored, charging out of the gate with savory notions of sautéed herbs, beef drippings and truffles with a core of crème de cassis , baked plums and mulberries. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it has a solid backbone of firm, velvety tannins and really compelling earthy undertones to all that decadent black fruit, finishing long and layered. 330 cases were made." (95 pts.)

JD94+ Jeb Dunnuck January 27, 2021

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga offers a beautiful, elegant character that carries classic darker currant and savory herb notes as well as plenty of chocolate, medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. The balance is spot on, and this beauty has solid mid-palate depth and enough tannins to warrant short-term bottle age." (94+ pts.)

VN91 Vinous Jan 2021

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga is a powerful, dark wine. Blackberry jam, gravel, espresso, sage and charcoal embers all give the Calistoga a real sense of brooding intensity and gravitas. All of the Rivers-Marie Cabernets are big wines. The Calistoga Cabernet is the most overly ripe of them. For my palate, it is on the edge of too much. The Calistoga Cabernet is a blend from two blocks at Larkmead." (91 pts.)

California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
