Critical Acclaim

RP91 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 30th Dec 2016

"I had the chance to taste two vintages of the entry level wine, starting with the 2012 Malbec Viña 1924, which showed the higher ripeness of the vintage, with aromas of dark cherries and scorched earth, darker and speaking in a lower tone of voice, still elegant but more in the style of a baritone, larger built. The palate is medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins and moderate acidity, coming through as balanced, with more concentration and more powerful. Here only 20% of the wine matured in oak barrels for some eight months, now third use barrels. The first bottled wine was from 2007, and the idea was to produce a completely unoaked wine, but they didn’t know if the market at that time would accept it, and decided to oak part of it. They started with new barrels and they kept using the same ones, as they didn’t want the oak to interfere with the wine. It would be a crime to over-oak the juice of such a vineyard. It was bottled back in March 2013. 15,490 bottles produced." (91 pts.)

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.
