Critical Acclaim

RP89 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 28th Jun 2015

"The 2013 Fathom 107 is a blend of 65% Riesling (using Clone 239) and 35% Gewurztraminer. It is bone dry and comes in at 12% alcohol. The name references the position of the winery’s Seneca Lake Eastern Shore vineyards, “east of the deepest point in all of the Finger Lakes, which is 640 feet deep or 107 fathoms.” The lake, says the winery, gives the vines moderate temperatures and produces wines with natural acidity. This is very nice, but the blend is a bit unusual in a worldwide context. The Gewurz, even at just one-third of the blend, dominates and gives this an unusual flavor profile. If you like Gewurz, no problem. If you don’t, this probably won’t be for you. As it airs out, the Riesling asserts itself more and this becomes more interesting. Juicy, fresh and bursting with flavor, it maintains its focus and drinks great. To be sure, it is not the most concentrated wine or the most powerful, but it is lively and its flavor profile is intriguing. It tastes great. It should hold reasonably well, too, but let’s err on the conservative side just now. There were 404 cases produced." (89 pts.)

SP87 Wine Spectator Nov 30, 2015

"Fresh ginger, lychee and pink grapefruit notes mingle. A light zing of bitter citrus through the finish imparts spine. Drink now. 405 cases made." (87 pts.)

Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.
