Bedrock Bedrock Vineyard Heritage 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 50623

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
One the brawnier wines in this range, the 2018 The Bedrock Heritage Wine is dense and powerful, as wines from this Sonoma Valley site so often are. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice, bay leaf and earthy tones add complexity as well as nuance. This virile, potent red is going to need a number of years to be at its very best, but it is already super-impressive. The field blend is approximately 75% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan and 5% Mataro, but includes a total of 27 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Heady, yet refined and polished, with boldly expressive black raspberry, orange peel and spice box flavors. This is full of additional nuances and builds toward big but fine-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 800 cases made.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso features baked berries, cherry cordial, spice cake and potpourri on the nose with touches of mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshingly tart and with a chewy backbone, it is wonderfully opulent and spicy on the palate with a long, earthy finish.

The 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is utterly sublime. Lifted, aromatically precise and nuanced, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is fabulous. Rose petal, blood orange, cranberry and raspberry notes give the Monte Rosso striking aromatic presence and brightness. Unfortunately, Bedrock, like all the other wineries that purchased grapes at Monte Rosso, no longer have access to the fruit off this historic ranch. Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell certainly chose a strong vintage as their last. The 2016 is sublime.

Comes at you like a surly teenager but wins you over with power and personality. Cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to brooding blackberry, orange zest and bay leaf flavors that finish with big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2026. 300 cases made.

The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)

Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Bedrock’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso, from one of the truly iconic vineyards in the United States, is fascinating to taste next to the Montecillo, as they are both hillside Cabernets. The Monte Rosso offers up a whole range of lifted, savory aromatics to play off its bright fruit. Blood orange, cinnamon, dried herbs and spice lend so much complexity and nuance. The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Evangelho Heritage Wine is rich, boisterous and super-expressive. Succulent black cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are front and center. There’s real weight and density here, yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2020 is dense and full of character. This year’s blend is mostly Zinfandel and Mataro.

The 2014 Carlisle Vineyard is one of the more structured, driving wines in the lineup. Today, my impression is of a tightly wound, powerful red that is going to need time to come together. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint are all pushed forward, but the 2014 needs time. The only question is how much. This is a distinctly red fruit-toned version of the Carlisle.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
From Mike Officer’s home vineyard, the 2014 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (planted in 1927) tips the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, but hides it beneath a cascade of beautiful briary, raspberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It’s full-bodied, deliciously pure, ripe and a total hedonistic turn-on. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

The 2020 Zinfandel Esola Vineyard is one of the highlights in this range from Bedrock. It opens with fabulous aromatics that are so vivid and so inviting. Sweet red berry fruit, pipe tobacco, cedar, sage and earthy accents lend striking nuance throughout. This is so seriously impressive.

The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.

A powerful, explosive wine, the 2019 Nervo Heritage Wine possesses tremendous energy right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, mint and spice lend striking aromatic nuance. The tannins are a big edgy at the moment, but time in bottle should take care of that. I imagine the 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of bottle age.
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
The 2019 Nervo Ranch Heritage is an Alexander Valley release, and the vines here were planted in the late 1890s on a 30-degree slope of shale just outside the town of Geyserville. Lots of spice, herbes de Provence, mulled cherries, and licorice notes all emerge from this beauty, and it’s medium-bodied, with a lively, elegant texture, present tannins, and a good finish. The 2018 Old Hill Heritage Wine is one of the many drop-dead gorgeous wines in the Bedrock range this year. The field blend of 30 varieties confers unusual complexity and nuance. Lavender, mint and sweet red cherry fruit develop, but it is the balance of power and finesse that I find most compelling. There are just so many layers of the Old Hill. Readers lucky enough to find it are in for a real treat.
