Item#: 54679
Vibrant, jammy, yet refined, with deep and polished notes of black raspberry, orange peel, espresso and smoked pepper. Builds richness and structure toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah, Alicante and other varieties. Drink now through 2030. 200 cases made.
The 2019 Old Hill Heritage Wine is fascinating, as it captures all the signatures of this site, but with the smaller scale that is typical of the vintage. Sweet, perfumed aromatics and silky tannins frame this exquisitely beautiful, vivid heritage wine. Old Hill is a classic Sonoma ranch planted with a Zinfandel-based field blend that in this case includes more than 30 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)
Another cuvée from ancient vines (late 1800s), the 2019 Old Hill Ranch Heritage gives up a complex, medium to full-bodied, richly textured style as well as red plum fruits, notes of peppery herbs and dried flowers, ripe yet firm tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. I love the purity of fruit, and it’s going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Gibson Ranch Heritage Wine is sourced from the oldest vines on the ranch, which date back to the 1880s. Quite unusually for a field blend, the Gibson Ranch is based on Grenache rather than on the far more common Zinfandel or Mataro. The aromatics, lifted by 20% whole clusters, are captivating. Blood orange, apricot, ginger, inky dark fruit and mint lend compelling inner sweetness and pliancy throughout. There is feeling of wildness in the Gibson Ranch that is impossible to miss. The Gibson Ranch will take adventurous readers for quite a ride. It is one of the most alluring and exotic wines in this range from Bedrock. Don’t miss it!

The 2019 Grenache Distenta I is composed of 76% Grenache, 9.3% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 2.4% Viognier. It was fermented with 43.5% whole clusters (predominantly Grenache) and matured for 23 months in 26.5% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, it explodes with scents of crushed blackberries and blueberries, tar, coffee beans, cracked pepper and thyme. The full-bodied palate has a frame of grainy tannins, seamless acidity and layer after layer of spicy and floral fruit. It has a latency that suggests it will continue to develop for many years in bottle. 1,536 cases and 600 magnums will be released in the spring of 2022. This 2019 is made almost entirely from estate fruit — just 15% comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The rest of the fruit comes from estate vineyards The Third Twin (39%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (11%) and Molly Aïda (3%).
Not yet bottled, the 2019 Grenache Ditenta 1 (which is the new name for the classic Grenache of the estate and means “unlabeled” in Latin) sports a dense purple hue as well as a flamboyant, exotic, complex nose of black raspberries, flowery incense, pepper, and spice. It’s incredibly layered and elegant, yet still has classic Sine Qua Non opulence and texture. It’s a brilliant Grenache in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Grenache offers a slightly more floral and perfumed style, with kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, sandalwood, and licorice. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that has a seamless, layered texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It’s a more ethereal, perfumed, ultra-fine effort that will drink well for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2019 Grenache is blended with 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 4% Graciano and was made using 65% whole clusters. Fruit comes from the Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, and the Alta Mesa Vineyard, Larner Vineyard and Harrison-Clarke Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was matured for about 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids and 50% used French barriques. Deep ruby in color, it opens with savory tones of tar and loamy earth that give way to potpourri, cinnamon stick, prosciutto and black cherries. The medium-bodied palate is bright and juicy with fragrant fruits, fine, grainy tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, latent, spicy finish hinting at further improvement in bottle. Bottled on August 21, 2021, and tasted May 25, 2022, it will be released to consumers in the summer of 2022. 395 cases and a few magnums are available; it will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), while magnums will be offered as a box set with the 2019 Andremily EABA. The 2018 Lorenzo’s Heritage Wine emerges from a block in Teldeschi, one of the most highly regarded sites in Dry Creek and Sonoma more broadly. Inky dark fruit, rose petal, mint and lavender are given an extra kick of energy by veins of bright acidity. Sumptuous and vibrant. the Lorenzo’s is positively stunning from the very first taste.

The 2018 Old Hill Heritage Wine is one of the many drop-dead gorgeous wines in the Bedrock range this year. The field blend of 30 varieties confers unusual complexity and nuance. Lavender, mint and sweet red cherry fruit develop, but it is the balance of power and finesse that I find most compelling. There are just so many layers of the Old Hill. Readers lucky enough to find it are in for a real treat.

One the brawnier wines in this range, the 2018 The Bedrock Heritage Wine is dense and powerful, as wines from this Sonoma Valley site so often are. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice, bay leaf and earthy tones add complexity as well as nuance. This virile, potent red is going to need a number of years to be at its very best, but it is already super-impressive. The field blend is approximately 75% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan and 5% Mataro, but includes a total of 27 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)
Heady, yet refined and polished, with boldly expressive black raspberry, orange peel and spice box flavors. This is full of additional nuances and builds toward big but fine-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 800 cases made.

Spry and briary, this Zinfandel is fun to drink, with lively black cherry, licorice and dried sage flavors, which take on richness and cracked pepper accents toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2031. 4,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

The 2021 Old Hill Heritage Wine is sensational. What a wine. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2021 is seamless, nuanced and just insanely complete from the very first taste. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Yields were very low, which seems to have simply concentrated the black cherry and plum flavors and ripened the tannins perfectly, all while maintaining the bright acid profile that is such a signature of this historic field blend site. The 2021 is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Bedrock. It is destined to become a classic. (Antonio Galloni)
Potent yet detailed, layered with deep blackberry, grilled anise, pepper, clove and other dusky spices that build power and richness toward broad-shouldered tannins. Approachable now but will be better in a few years. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2024 through 2031. (Tim Fish)

The 2021 Cuvée Karatas is another fabulous white from Bedrock. This is the first year that includes Semillon from a Monte Rosso selection planted at Bedrock (68%) with Sauvignon Blanc from Judge and Uboldi (32%). If that sounds like a pretty appealing combination, well, it is. Rich, layered and light on its feet, the 2021 is dazzling. It’s one of the very best whites I have ever tasted from Bedrock. World class all the way. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2014 Carlisle Vineyard is one of the more structured, driving wines in the lineup. Today, my impression is of a tightly wound, powerful red that is going to need time to come together. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint are all pushed forward, but the 2014 needs time. The only question is how much. This is a distinctly red fruit-toned version of the Carlisle.
From Mike Officer’s home vineyard, the 2014 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (planted in 1927) tips the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, but hides it beneath a cascade of beautiful briary, raspberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It’s full-bodied, deliciously pure, ripe and a total hedonistic turn-on. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)
Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso features baked berries, cherry cordial, spice cake and potpourri on the nose with touches of mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshingly tart and with a chewy backbone, it is wonderfully opulent and spicy on the palate with a long, earthy finish.
The 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is utterly sublime. Lifted, aromatically precise and nuanced, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is fabulous. Rose petal, blood orange, cranberry and raspberry notes give the Monte Rosso striking aromatic presence and brightness. Unfortunately, Bedrock, like all the other wineries that purchased grapes at Monte Rosso, no longer have access to the fruit off this historic ranch. Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell certainly chose a strong vintage as their last. The 2016 is sublime.
Comes at you like a surly teenager but wins you over with power and personality. Cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to brooding blackberry, orange zest and bay leaf flavors that finish with big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2026. 300 cases made.
