I’ve been tracking the increasing percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend of this iconic Tuscan wine. The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is made with 25% Cabernet Franc, with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. That this heat-resistant grape now makes up a quarter of the blend speaks to how vintners are gearing up to counter climate change. These are intelligent choices, and you can count on this wine to maintain that level of extreme elegance and intensity that it is known for (even when Merlot was a bigger part of the blend). Indeed, this is a new and improved Guado al Tasso with focused aromas of pencil shaving, white pepper and crushed stone that frame a rich core of black fruit. A fluttering of dried mint gives lift and power to the bouquet. This is a beautifully linear and powerful red blend. (Monica Larner)
The 2019 Guado al Tasso is a model of total refinement. Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but the 2019 has so much more to offer. I admire the wine’s balance and allure, both of which it has in spades. Like so many 2019s, Guado al Tasso is a wine more of energy and persistence than volume. Clean, bracing mineral notes linger on the sublime finish. The 2019 spent 18 months in barrel, 90% new. (Antonio Galloni)
This gorgeous, full-bodied red opens with layers of aromas including camphor, pipe tobacco, oak-driven spice and ripe black-skinned fruit. Boasting structure and finesse, the intense palate delivers ripe black plum, juicy cherry, licorice and menthol framed in ultrarefined tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2039. (Kerin O’Keefe)
Smooth and opulent, with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit accented by cedar, vanilla and iron notes. Dense and complex, yet accessible, this is balanced and persistent on the lingering aftertaste. Decant now or wait another year or two. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Bolgheri Superiore
2019 / 750 ml.
Item #: 58085
The 2019 Sor Ugo is a potent wine. Dried herbs, mocha, tobacco, leather and incense lend striking savory intensity to this tightly wound Bolgheri red. I would give the tannins a few years to soften. There’s plenty to look forward to. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Camarcanda is a fabulous example of how the estate has been pushing the bar higher consistently and with a steady hand. It is layered and compelling, with rich aromas of sage, anise, lavender, black cherry liqueur, and crushed salty limestone earth. A profound and impeccable wine with harmonious depth and balanced structure, it is concentrated and compact throughout, but it drives forward in the mouth with seamless energy and somehow retains the incredible mineral texture that the 2018 shows off with distinction. With super-fine tannins, it has a long arch to its expression and balances sweet fruit with a Tuscan stamp of herbaceous and mineral accents. Incredible. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
This is a gorgeous vintage that continues to flesh out beautifully. I added an extra point to my score since the last time I tasted the 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda in order to underline the great potential of this vintage. This wine could legally be a Bolgheri Superiore, but Angelo Gaja prefers not to use qualifying wine terms such as Superiore, Classico or Riserva in his various wine projects spanning from Piedmont to Tuscany to Etna. Semantics aside, this is a gorgeous wine—one of the best made at Ca’ Marcanda for sure—with impressive intensity and balance. Dark fruit and blackberry are contrasted against spice, tobacco, grilled rosemary and Mediterranean bramble. The 2019 vintage saw favorable weather conditions and “just the right amount of rain,” Gaja says. (Monica Larner)
This verges on thick yet remains balanced and vibrant, courtesy of the lively acidity. Boasts blackberry, dark plum and blueberry flavors framed by tar and toasty oak. The finish is both dense and clean, with a hint of licorice. Excellent length and potential. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 225 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2019 Camarcanda is a very good example of how much the wines have charged here. Medium in body with good depth, the 2019 Camarcanda is a tightly wound wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Dark cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice and spice build nicely, with pretty floral and mineral accents that liven up the finish. The 2019 is classy, elegant and polished. Give it a few years, as the tannins are pretty intense today, but this softens nicely with air. (Antonio Galloni)

In a sense, this wine is like the Bosco dei Sugheri but with the addition of one more grape variety in the blend. The Tua Rita 2019 Giusto di Notri is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. I tasted the wine shortly after it had been bottled. With 40,000 bottles made, it should start hitting the market now. The Giusto di Notri offers lots of dark primary fruit with important structure and texture in this classic vintage. Blackberry and black plum cede to spice, tar and campfire ash. There’s nothing not to like in this vintage that far exceeded initial expectations. I look forward to tasting more Tuscan reds from the excellent 2019 growing season.

Bolgheri Superiore
2019 / 750 ml.
Item #: 58492
With a stone-vaulted winery within the castle walls, Castello di Bolgheri makes wines that appeal to those who look for classic and traditional lines. There is indeed a lot of important history behind the 2019 Bolgheri Superiore, a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small elements of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Like the entry-level Varvàra, this wine boasts beautiful integration and soft lines that frame black fruit, spice and campfire ash. This wine holds back just a bit in terms of ripeness, and that explains the smooth elegance you get here. This is a special wine. (Monica Larner)
Distinguished by its silky texture, this red exudes black currant, cherry, tobacco, iron and spice aromas and flavors. Sleek in profile, well-structured and beautifully balanced, with a long finish driven by vibrant acidity. Features finesse, along with grip for aging. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. 2,500 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Underbrush, pipe tobacco, leather and blackberry aromas come to the forefront on this full-bodied, classy red. Enveloping and delicious, the palate shows concentration but is almost weightless at the same time, doling out dried cherry, black plum, cocoa and licorice alongside velvety tannins. Drink through 2029. (Kerin O’Keefe)
Currant and fresh-herb aromas with hints of grilled vegetables. Medium to full body. Juicy center-palate with a chewy finish. Structured and tannic, yet the center-palate is fresh. Drink after 2025.

A polished red, this offers plum, blackberry, black currant, leather and a hint of wild herb aromas and flavors. Balanced and harmonious, with refined tannins gracing the long, iron-tinged finish. This is very refined, with lots of sangiovese character, showing sour cherries, peaches, and bark, as well as pine needles. Medium-bodied and deliciously attractive. Fine tannins at the end. Drink now.
This is the first year the Riserva includes fruit from newly acquired vineyards in San Sano and Capraia. The 2019 Chiarti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori is stellar. In fact, the 2019 is the best vintage of this wine I have tasted and that comes through in the wine’s darkness and overall intensity. Black cherry, leather, spice, menthol and licorice are all dialed up big time. (Antonio Galloni)
A dense, beefy red, with black cherry, blackberry, earth and iron flavors coursing through. Balanced, in a compact sort of way, with a lingering finish of earth and dark fruit. Bright acidity drives the finish. Best from 2024 through 2033. 6,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark yet perfumed, with lavender and violet tones giving way to masses of ripe plum and cherry. Balsam herbs and hints of chalk develop with time in the glass, adding further depths. This is silky and round, with juicy acidity enlivening its ripe red and hints of blue fruit. Sweet spices, hints of cocoa and licorice linger, as the 2020 tapers off long with just a hint of fine tannin. This showboat of a Rosso is going to win a lot of hearts. (Eric Guido)
