Arnot-Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 57771

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Iron Corral Estate is rock-solid, with a rich, velvety, medium to full-bodied profile that’s very much in the style of the vintage. Nicely balanced, with lot of redcurrants, spiced plum, cedary incense, and tobacco, it has outstanding balance as well as length on the palate. It’s well worth seeking out. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Fresh and direct, with cassis, raspberry and red licorice notes enlivened by a hint of bramble and touch of applewood on the finish. Drink now through 2032. 5,004 cases made.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Holbrook Mitchell Vineyard is in the same league, offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of red plums, currants, chocolate, orange zest, and spice. With ripe tannins, a mouth-filling, expansive mouthfeel, and plenty of structure, it should keep for 15 years as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Riper and more voluptuous, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard is a selection from the estate vineyard and a smaller production release. It has a wealth of ripe black fruits, smoke tobacco, chocolate, and violets, with more lead pencil and earthy nuances emerging with time in the glass. Concentrated, full-bodied, yet balanced and incredibly pure, it’s another terrific, seamless wine from this estate readers will love. I like it today, but give bottles a year or three and enjoy over the following 20+. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a sumptuous, heady wine. It possesses tremendous richness and pure power from the outset. Inky dark fruit, mocha, espresso, leather and licorice infuse the 2019 with notable character. This deep, potent Cabernet delivers the goods, big time. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the gate with bold blackcurrant and blackberry preserves scents, plus hints of tilled soil, truffles and unsmoked cigars. The full-on opulent, rich, velvety palate is decadently laden with black fruit preserves and earthy accents, finishing long with a lively lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2021 Red Wine California is a new Bordeaux-based red wine that Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts made initially to take the place of the 2020 Cabernets that would have been released around this time but were compromised by smoke. The Red Wine was initially intended to be a fun project, but Arnot and Roberts may have stumbled into what is really a pretty serious red with real potential. The 2021 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (Massa, Bedrock and Gordenker), 20% Cabernet Franc (Persia) and 20% Merlot (Massa). A powerful, old-school wine, the 2021 is going to need a few years to shed some tannin. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The 2021 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is a model of precision and class. Pure and crystalline, the 2021 is superb. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. The 2021 is just pristine. This is what Trout Gulch Chardonnay is all about. The 2019 Gamay Noir El Dorado is another hugely appealing wine in this lineup. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal and spice give the 2019 striking inner sweetness and perfume. In this vintage, the El Dorado is a bit lighter in feel than it has been in the past. I imagine that is partly a reflection of the year and also the result of a reduction in carbonic maceration in the winemaking.

The 2020 Ribolla Gialla Vare Vineyard is super-elegant, savory and nuanced. In 2020, the Ribolla has a bit more edginess than in most years, probably a combination of the natural character of Ribolla, early bottling and the early personality of the year. I like the aromatics quite a bit, though. This needs time in bottle. There is plenty of energy.

The 2021 Trousseau + Pinot Noir takes the place of the Trousseau in this vintage. Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts felt the Trousseau was too light on its own, so they blended in some Pinot from Fox Creek to complement the Luchsinger Trousseau. The wine turned out beautifully. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco, spice, dried flowers and rose petal are all nicely lifted, with gorgeous aromatic presence from the 100% whole clusters. This translucent, wonderfully expressive red is all class. I have to say, the blend of Trousseau and Pinot Noir works so well. I would not be unhappy to see this wine again in future vintages.
