Lush and polished, with waves of cassis and blackberry compote pouring through, underscored by chocolate, espresso crema and roasted vanilla bean. Maintains a lush, velvety feel through the lengthy finish, where flashes of sweet tobacco and warm earth peek through. For the power Cabernet crowd. Best from 2024 through 2038. 22,226 cases made. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is elegant, deep and classy. Inky dark purplish fruit, savory herbs, menthol, licorice and spice. The purity of the fruit is remarkable today. There is plenty of youthful Howell Mountain tannin, so readers will have to be patient. Bright floral accents lift the red/purplish berry fruit nicely. This is such and expressive, alluring Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)

Ripe and very juicy, with a youthfully compact set of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors wrapped in licorice and violet notes. This is both racy and grippy, showing serious power but with the freshness and drive to match. Delivers a long, iron accent that scores the fruit through the finish. Best from 2024 through 2040. 3,523 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2022
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a typically long-term proposition, coated in dusty tannins and cedary oak. It will take time for the cassis, blueberry and slightly pine-scented backbone of this wine to emerge, as for the moment it’s almost difficult to taste. Yes, the concentration is present, the tannins are almost silky-ripe, but the structure of this medium to full-bodied wine is unassailable. Hands off for at least five years, and probably more, to judge by how past vintages have evolved. (Joe Czerwinski)

Next up, the 2018 La Magalena comes from the Oakville Ranch Vineyard and in 2018 is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Incredible notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, tobacco leaf, violets, and spring flowers all emerge from this beauty, and it hits the palate with flawless balance, full-bodied richness, a great, great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Probably a candidate for perfection in 5–7 years, this is a magical Bordeaux blend from an incredible terroir as well as a great winemaker. Hide bottles in the cellar for 5–7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The Favia 2018 La Magdalena is a powerhouse. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of inky dark red fruit as this hulking Cabernet Franc-based wine starts to open in the glass. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it is rather imposing at this stage. Mocha, dried rose petal, spice and a whole range of savory notes linger. All I can say is: Wow!

I also loved the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings another level of purity and class, offering gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, white flowers, tobacco leaf, vanilla bean, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Pure, clean, full-bodied, and just a classy, flawlessly balanced beauty, it has fine tannins, the freshness of the vintage, and a great finish. Enjoy bottles over the coming 15–20 years. Keever’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. In fact, it is one of the very best wines I have ever tasted here. Rich and explosive, with striking depth, the 2018 is beautifully layered and so expressive from the very first taste. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and licorice all build as this sumptuous Cabernet shows off its curves. I would give the 2018 a few years in bottle to soften. In a word: fabulous. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is another perfect wine, although readers will need to have patience, as it’s still a baby. Deep purple-hued with a perfumed, vibrant bouquet of blue fruits, graphite, spring flowers, and lead pencil, it’s full-bodied, sensationally concentrated, has perfectly integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol, not a hard edge to be found, and an incredible finish. This monumental Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is 7–8 years away from maturity and will have 40–50 years of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
Incredible purity and precision, as well as opulence, define the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, and this is as good as any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world today. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling bouquet of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, and an incredible minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, seamless texture, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This is classic 2018 Napa Valley with its purity, freshness and precision as well as sensational concentration and perfectly integrated acidity, tannins, and alcohol. It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4–5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

So much black licorice in this, together with tar, blackcurrants, blackberries and slate. Full-bodied, but very toned and focused, with polish and energy. Extremely fine tannins and wonderful length. All about balance and purity. Gorgeous now, but this will age for decades to come. Great finish. Better after 2026.
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select displays a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with bold crème de cassis, blueberry pie and black cherry preserves notes, plus hints of smoked meats, fragrant earth and tar, with a fragrant waft of violets and Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with an enticing herbal lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is stunning. Bright acids give the 2018 tons of energy. This is an especially mid-weight, refined Hillside Select that is all class. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and blood orange build in the glass. Elegant and bright, the 2018 shows all the energy of the year in spades. (Antonio Galloni)

Frankly ripe but well-focused, with blackberry and creamed boysenberry notes flowing through atop the polished structure, while cocoa and black licorice frame the finish. A subtle hint of sassafras lingers at the end, adding textural nuance. This has the stuffing to age well. Drink now through 2038. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Flashy, with boysenberry and mulberry pate de fruit notes that roll through, throwing off licorice snap and acai berry notes as well. Ends with a high-gloss toasty finish, but the fruit pushes through easily as apple wood and mint notes add range. For fans of the bold style. Drink now through 2040. 23,247 cases made.
