Lush and lovely aromas of black currant, violet and fruit-topped ice-cream sundae pull the nose into this hedonistic bottling. Those fresh, juicy flavors of blueberry sorbet and boysenberry syrup are dusted in cocoa on the finish, where the tannins hold firm. (Matt Kettmann)

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2021 Beautiful Earth Cabernet Sauvignon is scented of maraschino cherries, allspice, rose petals, bay leaves and pencil shavings, gaining in aromatic intensity as it unwinds in the glass. The full-bodied palate has a deep core of fruit yet is light on its feet, with fireworks of fresh acidity and abundant, finely grained tannins, and it has a long, layered finish. It will gain savory complexity in bottle over the next 15+ years. (Erin Brooks)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Gala Vineyard is fabulous. It emerges from a terraced vineyard at 1,800 feet in elevation in Napa Valley, just above the Coombsville AVA. Rich, dark and beautifully structured, the 2021 possesses notable pedigree and character. Black cherry, plum, gravel, licorice, bay leaf and espresso all race across the palate. Readers who enjoy old-school Napa Cabernets will adore this. This wine, if sold in Napa Valley, would cost four to five times as much. Don’t miss it! (Antonio Galloni)

This is deep and dark-fruited with toasted spices, smoked cedar, nut shell and earth. Full-bodied, and compact with juicy acidity and polished tannins. Deep and lengthy fruit character with notes of blueberry jam. A little chewy at the end. A blend of 70% zinfandel, 20% petite sirah, 7% syrah and 3% grenache. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Roasted boysenberry and charred beef aromas pull the nose into this always likably bottling. Ripe strawberry flavors meet with herb touches on the palate. (Matt Kettmann)

Considering this is mostly a syrah–petite sirah blend (with some grenache and mourvedre), it’s surprisingly lifted, its flavors of cherries and red plums carrying plenty of spicy oak. Serve with a light chill for chicken sausages.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
There’s a lot of woodspice on the nose of this playfully named blend of 57% Syrah, 24% Petite Sirah, 12% Grenache and 7% Mourvèdre, as well as aromas of elderberry juice and anise. The palate shows juicy and tart berry flavors, with cedar and just enough tannins. (Matt Kettmann)

Few brands combine style, substance and consistency like this one. This vintage’s Petite Sirah pops on the nose with black fruit, pepper, wild herb and light caramel. The palate is framed by firm but forgiving tannins that hold blueberry and peppery herb flavors together. (Matt Kettmann)
