When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a huge, opulent wine. A blast of inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, plum and menthol gives the 2019 its racy, extroverted personality. The Estate is a typical wine from Cade that balances Howell Mountain intensity with plenty of Napa Valley lushness. The 2019 is sure to be a crowd pleaser. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is even better, with a stunning nose of black and blue fruits as well as iron, black olive tapenade, and subtle herbal nuances. Pure 2019 goodness on the palate, it’s full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a finish. It’s not for those looking for old school Claret, but it brings beautiful richness and depth and will shine for at least 10–12 years as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Cade Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is blended of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the glass with vibrant black cherry preserves, wild blueberries and mulberries scents, giving way to a core of cassis and star anise plus a waft of chocolate box. Full-bodied, concentrated and packed with bright black fruits, it has a fine-grained texture and long, energetic finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
This is packed with steeped plum and blackberry fruit paste notes mixed with tar, roasted apple wood and warm earth. A racy savory stripe is nicely buried through the finish, where a violet echo lingers. Best from 2024 through 2036. 14,670 cases made. (James Molesworth)

What was previously released as the Oakville Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estates Tier comes all from To Kalon and was fermented in oak tanks and aged in 96% new French oak. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. Drink it over the coming two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Throws off some pretty gorgeous aromas of violet, anise and sweet bay leaf, with a core of ripe, streamlined boysenberry and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors following closely. The finish has a racy graphite edge, while the fruit and aromas just spill through. Approachable now, too. Drink now through 2034. 13,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Aromas of lead pencil, redcurrant, gravel, blackberry and sage. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Lovely depth and complexity here, with a wash of black fruit. Powerful, without being overdone. Delicious. Best after 2024.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.

Fortunate Son The Diplomat 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 61454

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
Riper and substantially more expressive than the 2018, Fortunate Son’s 2019 Red Wine The Diplomat is a plush, luscious wine, laden with black cherries, mocha and loam notes. It’s full-bodied, rich, velvety and supple, with a lingering finish. Like the previous vintage, it’s mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a fair whack of Merlot. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The Merlot-dominated 2019 The Diplomat comes from a handful of sites and would give a great Pomerol a run for its money with its darker red and black fruits, smoky herbs, and earthy goodness on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied, rounded, opulent 2019 with sweet, building tannins and a great finish. Give it a few years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another wonderfully evocative triumph from this family-owned Pitchard Hill pioneer. Deep garnet-purple colored, it storms out of the glass with profound scents of crème de cassis, blackberry preserves, licorice and mulberries, plus hints of unsmoked cigars, wild sage and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers fantastic intensity and great poise, offering fine-grained, ripe tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
The flagship from this great estate is the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, which checks in as a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It has an incredible nose of pure blue fruits as well as flowers, crushed stone, fresh thyme, tobacco, and graphite. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it’s nevertheless weightless and light on its feet, with wonderfully integrated acidity, polished tannins, and a great finish. This classic, quintessential Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon will benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and cruise for 20, 30, if not 40 years if stored correctly. 3800 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
Blackberries, blueberries, black licorice, ink and flowers on the nose. Tar, too. Full-bodied with plush, integrated tannins that are intertwined to pure velvet. The finish goes on and on. Wonderful balance and harmony. 2022 release. So excellent to drink now, but will be even better in 2023 and onwards. (James Suckling)
