This classically dry, Old World-style Cabernet is still a bit cool and laid-back but should evolve gracefully. Finishes with firm but fine-grained tannins and subtle savory grip. The flagship 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley is all Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in new barrels (mostly Taransaud and Darnajou). Beautiful crème de cassis, graphite, spice box, and lead pencil notes all flow to a full-bodied, soft, elegant wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and a seamless texture. It shows the more upfront, charming style of the vintage and is already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it should easily evolve for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Really juicy and savory at the moment with beautiful freshness and linear tightness that frames the wine. It’s full and flavorful with currants, coffee and walnuts. Mahogany, too. The tannins are polished and spread across the palate. Accessible and hard not to drink now, but will age wonderfully, too. Drink or hold.

Revisiting the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon at a year on, the wine remains bold and structured and has had a bit more time to come together and harmonize. The wine remains generous on the nose with sweetness of fruit and a glossy character, which offers chocolaty undertones in the glass with aromas of lavender and black cherry that are still persistent on the nose. Full-bodied, the tannins are beginning to round with an additional year in bottle. At the same time, the palate offers layers of dusty blackberry essence and juicy plums with elegant baking spices from the 100% new French oak aging before ending with a rich, juicy and intense finish. The original score and drink date still stand.

This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with fruit coming from Horse Heaven Hills sites Champoux, Lake Wallula, Palengat, and Wallula. It’s aromatically brooding out of the gate, with notes of cherry meats, barrel spice and incense, not yet ready to reveal its charms. Dense, focused, layered, almost creamy-feeling fruit flavors follow. It is coiled up tightly right now but has all of the stuffing to go the distance and then some. Best from 2030–2037.

Bright medium ruby to the rim. Very ripe aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice pastille, bitter chocolate, cocoa powder and minerals, lifted by a note of lavender; just this side of liqueur-like. Dense, sweet, silky and firm, with wonderfully suave, dense flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate and violet dominating. This savory wine finishes with a slowly building whiplash of flavor and the sophisticated seamless tannins to support a long evolution and graceful evolution in bottle. I still give the edge to the 2016 for its energy and lift, but this very deep, youthfully medicinal wine is potentially great as well. Real nobility of texture here (it saturates every square millimeter of the palate) and outstanding palate-staining length. Lots to come!

Bright, saturated ruby-red. Blackberry, boysenberry, licorice and minerals on the nose, lifted by topnotes of Tellicherry pepper and violet. Very suave, silky and smooth, conveying enticing sweetness to its refined dark berry, spice and mineral flavors. Terrific energy and delineation here, and long and suave on the rising finish, where the dusty tannins are beautifully buffered by the wine’s material. A lovely showing, even if this very juicy wine is still a bit youthfully imploded. This may be the most floral of the current red wine releases from L’Ecole.

The 2017 Perigee Seven Hills Vineyard Estate is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 9% each of Petit Verdot and Malbec. The nose opens to an expressive fruit core, highlighting juicy dark red fruit and spiced blackberry essence. Aromas of cinnamon-spiced dark cherries, sweet plums and a dusty minerality sway out of the glass with elements of an exotic floral bouquet. Full-bodied, the wine shows layers and a delineated, fresh frame with succulent tannins, offering a balanced structure across the mid-palate. The mouthfeel shows finesse with a purity of fruit before lingering with persistence, vibrancy and a subtle red spice reflection over the elongated finish. This is delicious juice.

Brooding aromas of cherry, plum, mocha, graphite, cherry and herb lead to medium-bodied fruit flavors, backed by tart acidity and firm, grainy tannins. The structure is lovely. It needs some time to stretch its legs, with the tannins giving a bigger impression than they often do from this vineyard. Best after 2024.

A resounding success, the deep ruby-colored 2017 Sorella displays beautiful purple highlights and explodes from the glass with aromas of blackberry, cigar box and dried tobacco with hints of graphite and dusty purple flowers. Full-bodied, the wine is ripe and round, with an immaculate mouthfeel, showing an impressive depth of flavor. With succulent red and black fruit expressions and soft cinnamon spice tones from oak, the wine is a whirlwind of complexity across the mid-palate. Emerging with a balanced structure and lifted tannic backbone, the wine lingers with persistence and intention, as flavors of dusty bitter dark chocolate, black plum and spiced dark cherries flutter across the finish. Bravo, this is absolutely stunning and will drink amazingly for the next two decades to come.

The 2017 Sorella is a knockout blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, sourced from the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Heady crème de cassis tones combine with suggestions of chocolate covered espresso bean, garrigue and black florals. While obviously dense, the core remains very fresh, delivering serious minerality and a lengthy finish. Brilliant to consume even now, this has a long way to go in the cellar.

Devastatingly gorgeous and refined, the 2018 Syrah John Lewis was made with 100% whole clusters. The nose gives up a stunning array of aromas with precision and finesse, brilliantly displaying dusty black raspberry, juicy currant and cassis with a kiss of oak to frame the picturesque fruit. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate offers immense pleasure with a regal mouthfeel, mineral tension, just-ripe red fruit tones and a soft tannic edge. The succulent acidity keeps the wine fresh in the mouth with a food-friendly expression across the elongated and evolving finish. The wine rested for 17 months in 7% new French oak puncheons. This bottling is clearly one of the great Syrahs coming from the Walla Walla Valley; if you are not familiar with this wine, you should absolutely check it out. Honestly, I just want to keep smelling my glass. Bravo! Only 2,400 bottles were filled.

Supple, fine-grained, spicy and nicely delineated; the best of these Syrahs in concentration, inner-mouth energy and grip, and a bit sweeter than the rest. Again, the tannins are wonderfully suave, but this wine also possesses more supporting material and ripeness. The very subtle, building finish shows terrific energy and grip, with the tannins spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate and teeth. A classic Gramercy Cellars Syrah.

Since its inception, John Lewis has been designated for the winery’s best Syrah, with an eye toward long-term ageablity (as well as pairing with food). This is a wine for the future. Aromas of raspberry, flower, smoked meat and herb lead to fresh, acid-driven flavors. The tannins give a firm squeeze. It’s largely about structure right now, but what lies underneath is beautiful. Pair it with roasted pork loin. Best after 2028, with a long life beyond that.

The 2017 Syrah Lagniappe comes all from the Red Willow Vineyard and was 10% destemmed and brought up in 10% new French oak. Deeper ruby/purple, with blackberry fruits interwoven with lots of ground pepper, gravelly earth, and iron-laced aromatics, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The balance here is spot on and it’s a classic, age-worthy Syrah from this estate. Give bottles 3–5 years and it’s going to evolve for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Densely packed, savory and fine-grained, with an impression of peppery vinosity lifting the middle palate. Superb intensity and flavor definition here, along with a subtle sweetness. The firm, rising back end shows strong black fruit and black olive flavors lifted by a soil-driven peppery element. This bottling stood out in 2016 for its intensity and light touch, and this 2017 is a worthy successor, finishing with resounding palate-staining length and grip. Ultimately, I’d have a hard time identifying this Syrah as a Washington wine owing to its sharp definition and light touch. (Stephen Tanzer)

It leads with scents of olive and pine tips, a bit of black plum and mocha which, with air, becomes more biting, like espresso. The flavors are savory, the fruit remaining in the background for now, with a firm texture that calls for something rich to offset, like pork roast.

Medium ruby-red. Aromas of blackcurrant, dark raspberry, espresso, bitter chocolate and graphite. Silky and plush but also vinous on entry, then densely packed, seamless and deep in the middle, with savory red and blacker fruit flavors complicated by subtle brown spices and minerals. Conveys excellent inner-mouth peppery lift and vinosity without coming across as green. This wine struck me as quite similar to its 2015 predecessor, suggesting that owner/winemaker Greg Harrington was especially successful in avoiding obvious signs of the very hot 2015 growing season. This savory, classically dry, energetic Cabernet Sauvignon finishes with firm, suave tannins and slowly mounting persistence.
