When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Dark berries, cedar, walnuts, sweet spices and pencil shavings on the nose. Full-bodied and so polished and linear, with a chalky texture to the tannins. Wide and layered. Beautiful fruit. Lingering and refined. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is smoking good, with a full-bodied, rich, opulent wine that has classic cassis and darker blue fruits as well as leafy tobacco, baking spice, and bouquet garni notes. This textured, ripe, sexy wine stays nicely balanced, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another awesome value. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 7% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, 2% Petite Sirah and 1% Syrah and matured for 20 months in 55% new French oak. It has a nose of red cherries, tobacco leaves, vanilla and allspice. The medium-bodied palate has easygoing yet nuanced fruit, powdery tannins, seamless acidity and a long finish laced with oak spices. 27,500 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from a great vintage for Napa Valley and comes all from the Monte Bello Vineyard on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Pure crème de cassis, leafy tobacco, spring flowers, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, concentrated, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This Saint-Julien-like beauty needs 4–6 years of bottle age but will keep for 30 years. It’s not far off the Monte Bello and should be snatched up. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
Still not bottled at the time I tasted it, the 2021 Papillon Red Wine is a five-variety Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) that spends 13 months in 44% new oak. While not that complex, it does offer up bold cherry and cassis aromas on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and velvety, with a long, almost zesty finish. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 11, 2024
A dark, winey style, with linzer torte and blackberry confiture notes that feel rather steeped, as licorice, mocha and sweet tobacco notes fill in on the polished finish. For fans of the more obvious style. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2031. 18,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Ripe and polished, with a friendly core of steeped plum and black cherry fruit given a nice sheen of judicious toast. A light savory hint keeps this honest. Drink now through 2026. 22,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This is a cleanly, properly made wine, done in an intentionally butter-bomb style that will please some and enrage others for being a caricature. Marshmallow, sweet cream and rich butter aromas lead into a palate that’s like eating a butter popsicle sprinkled with just a bit of lemon juice. (Matt Kettmann)

Red-cherry and light smoke aromas are fresh and charming on the nose of this bottling. The palate hits with bright flashes of raspberry and cherry, as sumac and star anise add intrigue and the acidity lingers long. (Matt Kettmann)
