Kongsgaard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 53266

RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Nov 2019
A barrel sample, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon features a deep garnet-purple, singing on the nose of freshly crushed black cherries, black berry pie and warm plums over a core of cassis and pencil lead plus nuances of violets, cinnamon stick and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating, crunchy black fruit with a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
VN90+90–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, pungent and savory. Black olives, grilled herbs, blackberry jam, cloves, iron and leather as well as intense barbeque smoke give the broad 2018 a wild, really exotic character. If I had tasted it blind, I would have pegged it as Syrah. The is an undeniably wild and unusual wine; I am not really sure what to make of it at this stage. It is also a rare vintage that is pure 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Bedrock’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso, from one of the truly iconic vineyards in the United States, is fascinating to taste next to the Montecillo, as they are both hillside Cabernets. The Monte Rosso offers up a whole range of lifted, savory aromatics to play off its bright fruit. Blood orange, cinnamon, dried herbs and spice lend so much complexity and nuance. The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months. The alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the gate with bold expressions of warm cassis, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of chocolate box, menthol, tapenade, smoked meats and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with vibrant black fruits, framed by fantastically ripe, fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Always one of top wines in a vintage, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another gorgeous wine with a more plush, supple texture that hides solid underlying structure and tannins. Beautiful notes of blueberries, new leather, camphor, violets, and smoked tobacco all flow to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured beauty that’s very much in the style of the vintage. Possessing remarkable purity, flawless balance, and building tannins, give bottles 4–5 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 25+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is bright, punchy and structured. Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, lavender, menthol and crushed rocks all come alive in the glass. This searingly tannic, mountain Cabernet needs a good deal of time to open, but when it does, it dazzles. Bright floral notes, blood orange and slightly redder tonalities of fruit develop over time. The Pritchard Hill is a wine for readers who can be patient.

Blue fruit with boysenberry and floral aromas. Cassis, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and toned on the palate with fine tannins that are formed and polished. A classic wine. Give this three or four years to soften. Best after 2024.

Subtle aromas of dark cherry, toasted mahogany and roasted nut are very balanced on the nose of this bottling. The palate offers incense and potpourri flavors against a fresh red-fruit element. On the spicy, peppery finish, the leathery tannins continue their grip. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine to focus on in this range in 2018. Dark and brooding, the 2018 is such a classic Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet. It offers up copious black fruit, dried herbs, chocolate, lavender and underbrush, all in a super-classic, mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. This might very well be the best value in artisan, high-end California Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)

This offers up a solidly ripe core of crushed plum and warmed cassis notes laced with toasted vanilla, tobacco and a flash of loam. Light savory thread through the finish injects cut and energy. Best from 2021 through 2031. 1,502 cases made.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big wine, but it is also surprisingly approachable for a young Kongsgaard Cabernet. Bright and vibrant, the 2019 offers up copious dark red/purplish fruit, mocha, wild flowers and pomegranate, with a firm spine of tannin that gives the wine its energy and shape. The 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of time in the cellar. Actually, it already is.

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, sumptuous, flamboyantly ripe wine. This is especially opulent, even by Kongsgaard standards. Chocolate, plum, cloves, new leather, licorice and spice build in a pliant, sumptuous Cabernet that will drink well right out of the gate. A year ago, the 2017 was massively tannic; today, it is much more suave and sensual, albeit with huge depth to back that up.

RP97+97–99+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Nov 2019
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyard barrel sample explodes form the glass with an incredible array of classic Syrah notes: black cherries, black plums, blackberries and licorice with hints of garrigue, tar, bouquet garni and bacon fat. Full-bodied, the palate is equally atomic, with bags of expressive black fruits and meaty/peppery hints framed by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long, refreshing and oh-so-spicy.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyards is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Sleek and silky to the core, the 2018 possesses exceptional balance and tons of pedigree. In 2018, the Syrah is all primary fruit, while the varietal savory notes, that are typical of this wine, have not emerged yet.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyards is remarkably primary and yet, texturally, it is a wine of tremendous polish and sophistication. Today, it is the wine’s persistence that is most impressive. Like most of the 2018s here, the Syrah is light on its feet, nuanced and all about finesse. I can’t wait to see it in another year.
