Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 59203

SP95+95–98 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
Youthfully balled up, but there’s a ton of gorgeous cassis, raspberry and plum fruit, all of it kept in check right now thanks to a bolt of iron as riveting as I’ve seen in this wine. Barrel samples are often easily impressive, but this is way more than that.—Non-blind Louis M. Martini vertical (July 2020). (James Molesworth)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
Well-built, with a dense core of red and black currant reduction flavors held in check for now, while iron-tinged sweet tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes hold sway. Packs a muscular, racy structure that drives underneath, so just give this a bit more time to fully meld. Rock-solid, though. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,350 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022
Aromas of currants, blackberries, vanilla, walnuts and cedar. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Plush, supple and textured with a deep core of dark fruit and spice. Vanilla, too. Rich and flavorful. Big, chewy wine. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Martini’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard has the site’s characteristic mint and herbal overtones, but it also offers deep cassis and plum notes. Full-bodied, ripe but firm, with typical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal austerity and reserve, framed by fine-grained, silky tannins that linger on the finish, it’s a classic example of Monte Rosso Cabernet. (Joe Czerwinski)

Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely impeccable. Best of all, it won’t require years in the cellar to be enjoyable. In fact, it is quite expressive today. Juicy dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Silky and supple, with no hard edges, Ric Forman’s 2018 is a thing of beauty. The 2018 is a bit more open in the early going than Forman fans are likely to expect.

RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Nov 2019
A barrel sample, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon features a deep garnet-purple, singing on the nose of freshly crushed black cherries, black berry pie and warm plums over a core of cassis and pencil lead plus nuances of violets, cinnamon stick and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating, crunchy black fruit with a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
VN90+90–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, pungent and savory. Black olives, grilled herbs, blackberry jam, cloves, iron and leather as well as intense barbeque smoke give the broad 2018 a wild, really exotic character. If I had tasted it blind, I would have pegged it as Syrah. The is an undeniably wild and unusual wine; I am not really sure what to make of it at this stage. It is also a rare vintage that is pure 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Nov 2020
Composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and notes of blackberry compote, warm cassis and wild blueberries plus suggestions of bay leaves, menthol, unsmoked cigars and tree bark with a touch of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit layers with loads of invigorating herbal accents and a grainy texture, finishing earthy.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is fresh, vibrant and fruity, all of which make it a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Ripe red berry fruit, wild flowers, mint and sweet spice are front and center. This pliant, inviting Cabernet has so much to offer.
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 27, 2021
The base appellation 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot) is a terrific value, offering loads of blue and black fruits as well as notes of tobacco, candied violets, Asian spices, and sandalwood. Medium to full-bodied, with rock-solid overall balance, ripe yet integrated tannins, and a great finish, this is a classic, well-made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy over the coming 10–12 years. RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is redolent of chocolate-covered cherries, blackberry preserves and black currant jelly with touches of wild sage, cast iron pan and cardamom with a waft of cumin seed. Full-bodied, the palate bursts with crunchy black fruit and loads of spicy accents, supported by firm grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and lively.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch is soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red-toned fruit. Sweet cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and mocha are all laced together. The State Ranch is not quite as deep or powerful as some of the other wines in the range, but on the plus side, it will drink well with only minimal cellaring.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
This thickly concentrated wine is brimming in leather and dried herb tones. Black fruit dominates and broods along the rounded, velvety palate, offering luxury and complexity in equal measure.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
This is well-built, with cassis, crushed plum and blackberry fruit flavors that stretch out slowly and surely, inlaid with graphite, sweet tobacco and violet accents throughout. Ample tarry grip on the back end will need some cellaring to unwind. Best from 2022 through 2032. 4,881 cases made.

A delicious, savory cabernet with aromas and flavors of dried flowers and cherries. Medium body with round, creamy tannins. Savory and flavorful. Supple. Real cabernet character. Delicious now.
RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
With 180,000 cases produced and a price tag under $25 (savvy shoppers will be able to find it under $20), consumers shouldn’t overlook Martini’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, which comes largely from the Gallo-owned properties of Frei Ranch (39%) and Barrel Creek (34%). It offers up bright cassis notes on the nose, plus hints of boysenberry and cherry, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and softly dusty on the finish. While it’s less rich and complex than many more expensive Cabernets from Napa and Sonoma, it’s a solid, fruit-forward wine that most readers should find affordable. (Joe Czerwinski)

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Martini’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley comes from a multitude of Gallo-owned properties and includes about one-fourth purchased fruit. Marked by notes of almost peppery-spicy oak and ripe cassis, it’s full-bodied, ripe and generous, still not that rich or textured but a clear step up from Martini’s Sonoma County Cabernet, with a long, mouthwatering finish.
