Nickel & Nickel State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 53559

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is redolent of chocolate-covered cherries, blackberry preserves and black currant jelly with touches of wild sage, cast iron pan and cardamom with a waft of cumin seed. Full-bodied, the palate bursts with crunchy black fruit and loads of spicy accents, supported by firm grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and lively.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch is soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red-toned fruit. Sweet cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and mocha are all laced together. The State Ranch is not quite as deep or powerful as some of the other wines in the range, but on the plus side, it will drink well with only minimal cellaring.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
This thickly concentrated wine is brimming in leather and dried herb tones. Black fruit dominates and broods along the rounded, velvety palate, offering luxury and complexity in equal measure.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
This is well-built, with cassis, crushed plum and blackberry fruit flavors that stretch out slowly and surely, inlaid with graphite, sweet tobacco and violet accents throughout. Ample tarry grip on the back end will need some cellaring to unwind. Best from 2022 through 2032. 4,881 cases made.

Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

I also loved the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings another level of purity and class, offering gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, white flowers, tobacco leaf, vanilla bean, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Pure, clean, full-bodied, and just a classy, flawlessly balanced beauty, it has fine tannins, the freshness of the vintage, and a great finish. Enjoy bottles over the coming 15–20 years. Keever’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. In fact, it is one of the very best wines I have ever tasted here. Rich and explosive, with striking depth, the 2018 is beautifully layered and so expressive from the very first taste. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and licorice all build as this sumptuous Cabernet shows off its curves. I would give the 2018 a few years in bottle to soften. In a word: fabulous. Incredible purity and precision, as well as opulence, define the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, and this is as good as any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world today. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling bouquet of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, and an incredible minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, seamless texture, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This is classic 2018 Napa Valley with its purity, freshness and precision as well as sensational concentration and perfectly integrated acidity, tannins, and alcohol. It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4–5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 7, 2022
So much black licorice in this, together with tar, blackcurrants, blackberries and slate. Full-bodied, but very toned and focused, with polish and energy. Extremely fine tannins and wonderful length. All about balance and purity. Gorgeous now, but this will age for decades to come. Great finish. Better after 2026.
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select displays a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with bold crème de cassis, blueberry pie and black cherry preserves notes, plus hints of smoked meats, fragrant earth and tar, with a fragrant waft of violets and Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with an enticing herbal lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is stunning. Bright acids give the 2018 tons of energy. This is an especially mid-weight, refined Hillside Select that is all class. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and blood orange build in the glass. Elegant and bright, the 2018 shows all the energy of the year in spades. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Frankly ripe but well-focused, with blackberry and creamed boysenberry notes flowing through atop the polished structure, while cocoa and black licorice frame the finish. A subtle hint of sassafras lingers at the end, adding textural nuance. This has the stuffing to age well. Drink now through 2038. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Subtle aromas of dark cherry, toasted mahogany and roasted nut are very balanced on the nose of this bottling. The palate offers incense and potpourri flavors against a fresh red-fruit element. On the spicy, peppery finish, the leathery tannins continue their grip. (Matt Kettmann)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - May 2022
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine to focus on in this range in 2018. Dark and brooding, the 2018 is such a classic Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet. It offers up copious black fruit, dried herbs, chocolate, lavender and underbrush, all in a super-classic, mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. This might very well be the best value in artisan, high-end California Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)

Ripe and well-built, with a solid core of blackberry, black currant and melted black licorice notes that move in unison, picking up a subtle singed alder hint on the focused finish, with subtle juicy energy running all the way through. Best from 2023 through 2034. 4,400 cases made.

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
I loved the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch. This Yountville beauty has a great nose of pure cassis and blackcurrant fruits as well textbook Cabernet notes of lead pencil shavings, chalky mineral, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and perfectly balanced, it has fine tannins and the class to evolve for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch comes from a parcel in the center of the valley, but it’s one that is relatively rocky and well drained, according to winemaker Joe Harden. Apparently, the vineyard is now owned by Thomas Keller. Delicate hints of sage and mint accent black cherries and blueberries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is defined by softly dusty tannins and ample, mouthwatering length. (Joe Czerwinski)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 5, 2021
Stewed blackcurrants, cassis, smoked meat, toffee and walnuts on the nose. Full-bodied with fine, sleek tannins and fresh acidity. Succulent and polished with a juicy, flavorful finish. Drink from 2023.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch offers good upfront intensity, but it is ultimately just a bit lean. There is good energy though. Dark cherry, tobacco, licorice, leather and dried herbs build with a bit of time, and yet the 2019 remains a touch nervous and compact. Perhaps it will flesh out more with some time.
