Peter Michael Winery 'Les Pavots' 2020 / 750 ml.

Note: The image above may display a previous vintage of this item.
Item#: 60128
The 2020 Les Pavots is made up of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Petite Verdot and includes fruit from some of the oldest vines at Peter Michael, planted in 1989. Unusually, there is no Cabernet Franc in the blend this vintage, as it was affected by the wildfire smoke. Deep ruby-purple in color, it is shy to begin, taking time to reveal pure red plums, chocolate, graphite, green bell pepper and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied palate offers generous, alluringly herbal fruits, a luxurious, silky frame and seamless acidity, finishing long and latent. It develops dramatically in the glass, suggesting it will require a few hours in the decanter to show at its best. 1,910 cases were made; this will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, made entirely with free-run juice, is blended with 23% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 16 months in 50% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it offers savory aromas of black cherries, charcuterie, cedar, mushroom, tobacco, dried herbs and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with savory fruits and a mineral-driven finish. (Erin Brooks)
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a barrel sample of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Petit Verdot (25%), matured for 16 months in 50% new oak. Still youthfully coiled, it hints at blueberry fruit with swirls of graphite, soy sauce and exotic spices. The medium-bodied palate is velvety in texture, savory in character and finishes with uplifting acidity. This is due to be bottled in May 2022. (Erin Brooks)

This is very perfumed with blackberry and pine-cone aromas, as well as raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins that are tight-grained. Creamy and beautiful. Currant and graphite flavors come through. Lightly chewy at the end. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Drink after 2025.
From one of the smallest yields in the history of this Knights Valley vineyard, the 2019 Les Pavots matured in 70% new French oak. It’s a dark, concentrated effort, with straightforward aromas of black cherries, cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate, a full-bodied, plush feel on the palate and a long, velvety finish. A delicious blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, it should possess close to two decades of drinkability.

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc L’Après-Midi, blended with 3% Sémillon, fermented in barrel and matured for eight months, bursts from the glass with touches of flint and candle smoke that give way to apricot, acacia and alluring herbal tones. The light-bodied, gently creamy palate surprises with its explosive, lime and panna cotta-driven flavors, expanding to more savory beeswax undertones as it glides across the palate, complemented by focused acidity. Powerful yet energetic, it promises dynamic development in bottle over the next 5–7 years or more. 2,038 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc l’Apres Midi includes a tiny proportion of Sémillon. Picked very ripe and barrel fermented in about 20% new French oak, but with the malolactic fermentation blocked, it’s a full-bodied creamy-textured white wine, with notes of ripe fig and melon accented by grassier notes, lime zest and hints of struck flint and crushed stone. I prefer this style of wine on the young side, so I’d suggest drinking it over the next couple of years.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice pours a deep ruby and offers loads of spiced aromas of woodsy earth, cinnamon, and red cherry. Medium-bodied, with good concentration and ripe fruit that fills the palate with notes of red plum, baking spices, and pine, it’s a clean red with fine tannins, good richness, and purity, and its finish reveals a floral component of roses, ripe wild raspberry, and fresh herbs. Drink 2025–2037. (Audrey Frick)
I tasted the 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice as a finished barrel sample a week before it was racked to tank and bottled. Made from destemmed grapes and matured in 40% to 50% new French oak, it has a medium ruby-purple in color and inviting scents of red cherry, cranberry sauce, cinnamon, rose petal and potpourri, offering new aromatic nuances with each return to the glass. The medium-bodied palate is silky and seamless with concentrated, spicy red fruit and a long, latent finish. It will need another 3–5 years in bottle to continue its development and show at its best. 1,083 cases were made. This will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)

The 2020 Chardonnay Belle Côte, matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak, explodes with singular aromas of ginger, lemongrass and Meyer lemon with streaks of flint and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is just as intense, offering highly concentrated fruit, seamless acidity, expansive, spicy flavors and a finish that goes on and on. Ultra concentrated and perfumed, the Belle Côte is especially expressive this vintage. 2,782 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
More linear than la Carriere or Mon Plaisir this vintage, the 2020 Chardonnay Belle Cote boasts narcissus-like florals, white peaches, lime zest and toasted almond on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied and lush yet long and focused, with just a hint of mocha on the finish.
Shows salted butterscotch, peach and tangerine flavors that are polished and focused, with lemon blossom, poached pear and candied ginger notes on a plush, elegant frame. Features a fresh edge of acidity. Drink now through 2032. 2,782 cases made.

I tasted the 2021 Chardonnay La Carrière as a finished tank sample the day before it was bottled. It comes from vines planted in 1994 on volcanic soils and was matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak. It opens soft and creamy on the nose, gaining in intensity as it blossoms to scents of matchstick, saline, Meyer lemons and wafts of lemongrass. The medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and focused acidity to support its expansive, perfumed fruit, and its classy new oak character is already well integrated. I love this juxtaposition of concentrated flavor and shimmery, energetic acidity. 2,128 cases were made. This will be released in February 2023. (Erin Brooks)
Exquisite, with power and delicacy to the butterscotch pudding, marmalade and fresh peach flavors at the core. But this white is just getting started, showing lemon zest, fresh rosemary flowers and candied ginger notes that add complexity and length, plus litsea oil accents, vibrant acidity and a supple texture. Drink now through 2029. 2,128 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
A brilliant straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay La Carriere is fragrant with fresh lime zest, jasmine, and Williams pear. Medium to full-bodied, notes of candied green apple, green melon, and lemon curd are revealed in this fresh, lively white, which has great freshness, notable energy, and vibrant purity. Drink 2023–2032. (Audrey Frick)

I tasted the 2021 Chardonnay Belle Côte as a finished tank sample the day before it was bottled. From vines planted in 1990, it was matured for 12 months in 40% new French oak. It offers lush aromas of baked apples and apricots, jasmine, biscuit, nutmeg and cream with spicy, floral nuances arising as it airs in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and expansive with streaks of flint and focused acidity to balance its generous fruit. Expressive and inviting, it’s a pleasure to drink now, yet the way it transforms in the glass suggests it will also develop positively in the cellar over the next decade or more. 2,159 cases were made, and it will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)
From the oldest Chardonnay vines on the property, planted in 1990, the 2021 Chardonnay Belle-Cote pours a medium yellow and has an expressive perfume of wildflowers, wet stone, and white peach. Full-bodied, this floral profile is just as pronounced and long on the palate, with a soft, silky texture and ripe notes of melon, honeysuckle, and honeyed lemon. Long and attractive, it can be enjoyed 2024–2034. (Audrey Frick)
This has an impressive presence while still showing plenty of finesse to the apricot pastry, vanilla cream and orange blossom flavors, with details of nutmeg, crisp citrus and marzipan on the finish. Drink now. 2,159 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

More minerality, graphite, and scorched earth notes emerge from the 2018 Les Pavots. Full-bodied and uber-concentrated, it reveals building tannins, awesome mid-palate depth, and one heck of a great finish. It’s a serious, powerful, blockbuster beauty that also holds onto perfect balance and a beautiful sense of elegance. It will keep for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Love the sweet berries, black olives, tile and fresh herbs on the nose with floral undertones. Oyster shell, too. Full-bodied with round, creamy tannins that are beautifully polished and refined. Very long finish. All about finesse and wonderful length. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Drink after 2023.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots presents a beguiling mix of Knights Valley savoriness and the more restrained style that is such a signature of the Peter Michael wines today. A dark, mysterious wine, the Pavots offers up an enticing mélange of dark cherry, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, lavender, cured meats and scorched earth. There is plenty of virile intensity, but without the heaviness of some past years. The Pavots is in my view the Peter Michael wine that has undergone the most dramatic transformation in recent years, and that’s a positive.
Located in Knights Valley, Sonoma, the Les Pavots vineyard is located in the oldest of the estate-owned sites, planted in 1989. It is situated at 1,000-1,400 feet and is quite steep in areas. Composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Les Pavots is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock the intense scents of blackcurrant preserves, ripe black plums and boysenberries with touches of wild sage, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate is densely packed and tightly wound with loads of black fruits, dried herbs and earthy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and energetic. 3,255 cases were made.

Aromatic and vibrant, revealing orange blossom and wildflower honey notes up front, with a terrifically concentrated core of lemon curd, peach and mango. Fresh and juicy, with hints of vanilla custard and a touch of sea salt toffee lingering on the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2030. 2,150 cases made.
Matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak, the 2020 Chardonnay La Carrière is more aromatically reserved than its 2021 counterpart, taking time to give up scents of baked peaches, pie crust, jasmine and allspice. The medium-bodied palate is open and inviting, with refreshing acidity to balance its concentrated, spicy fruit and a touch of phenolic texture anchoring the long finish. It continues to blossom dramatically with air, so give this a couple of hours in the decanter to show its best. 2,150 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
More opulent and tropical than the 2019, the 2020 Chardonnay la Carriere offers up scents of apricot, tangerine, pineapple and mango on the nose. It’s full-bodied, plush and pillowy-soft on the mid-palate, then bright and citrusy on the finish.

La Carriere is situated at an elevation of around 1,200-1,700 feet with a rocky, shallow, volcanic soil that gives low fertility and is among the lowest yields of all the Peter Michael vineyards. The vineyard is planted to Dijon and Hyde (Old Wente) clone selections. A tank sample due to be bottled in the next day or so, the 2019 Chardonnay la Carriere reveals delicate scents of fresh green apples, white peaches and preserved lemons with hints of chalk dust, orange blossoms and coriander seed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a satiny texture with bags of freshness lifting the mineral-tinged citrus flavors to a long finish. 2,836 cases were made.
Those looking for more minerality and precision, yet still with serious richness, should check out the 2019 Chardonnay La Carriere. As with all the Chardonnays here, it’s from the Knights Valley estate and has wonderful stone and apple fruits as well honeyed minerality, almond paste, and grilled bread aromas and flavors. One of the more inward, tight, and structured Chardonnay in the vintage, give bottles another year or so and enjoy over the following 7–8. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2019 Chardonnay La Carrière is a wine of tremendous density and power. Crushed rocks, slate, smoke, lemon peel and dried herbs form a complex fabric of aromas, flavors and textures as the 2019 opens in the glass. The 2019 is one of the most vibrant, focused La Carrière I can remember tasting.
