Bedrock Gibson Ranch Heritage 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 55342

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Gibson Ranch Heritage Wine is sourced from the oldest vines on the ranch, which date back to the 1880s. Quite unusually for a field blend, the Gibson Ranch is based on Grenache rather than on the far more common Zinfandel or Mataro. The aromatics, lifted by 20% whole clusters, are captivating. Blood orange, apricot, ginger, inky dark fruit and mint lend compelling inner sweetness and pliancy throughout. There is feeling of wildness in the Gibson Ranch that is impossible to miss. The Gibson Ranch will take adventurous readers for quite a ride. It is one of the most alluring and exotic wines in this range from Bedrock. Don’t miss it!

The 2019 Grenache Distenta I is composed of 76% Grenache, 9.3% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 2.4% Viognier. It was fermented with 43.5% whole clusters (predominantly Grenache) and matured for 23 months in 26.5% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, it explodes with scents of crushed blackberries and blueberries, tar, coffee beans, cracked pepper and thyme. The full-bodied palate has a frame of grainy tannins, seamless acidity and layer after layer of spicy and floral fruit. It has a latency that suggests it will continue to develop for many years in bottle. 1,536 cases and 600 magnums will be released in the spring of 2022. This 2019 is made almost entirely from estate fruit — just 15% comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The rest of the fruit comes from estate vineyards The Third Twin (39%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (11%) and Molly Aïda (3%).
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021
Not yet bottled, the 2019 Grenache Ditenta 1 (which is the new name for the classic Grenache of the estate and means “unlabeled” in Latin) sports a dense purple hue as well as a flamboyant, exotic, complex nose of black raspberries, flowery incense, pepper, and spice. It’s incredibly layered and elegant, yet still has classic Sine Qua Non opulence and texture. It’s a brilliant Grenache in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A kitchen sink blend (I think it’s mostly Grenache) that’s 80% from the Sierra Foothills and the rest from Sonoma and Napa, the ruby-hued 2019 Vermillion is a fruit-forward, incredibly charming, satisfying red offering medium-bodied aromas and flavors of spiced red fruits, sandalwood, and white and black pepper. It’s beautifully balanced, has fine tannins, no hard edges, and a clean, dry finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s already hard to resist, and I see no need to delay gratification either, although it should have 4–5 years of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Grenache offers a slightly more floral and perfumed style, with kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, sandalwood, and licorice. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that has a seamless, layered texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It’s a more ethereal, perfumed, ultra-fine effort that will drink well for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2019 Grenache is blended with 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 4% Graciano and was made using 65% whole clusters. Fruit comes from the Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, and the Alta Mesa Vineyard, Larner Vineyard and Harrison-Clarke Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was matured for about 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids and 50% used French barriques. Deep ruby in color, it opens with savory tones of tar and loamy earth that give way to potpourri, cinnamon stick, prosciutto and black cherries. The medium-bodied palate is bright and juicy with fragrant fruits, fine, grainy tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, latent, spicy finish hinting at further improvement in bottle. Bottled on August 21, 2021, and tasted May 25, 2022, it will be released to consumers in the summer of 2022. 395 cases and a few magnums are available; it will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), while magnums will be offered as a box set with the 2019 Andremily EABA. Vibrant, jammy, yet refined, with deep and polished notes of black raspberry, orange peel, espresso and smoked pepper. Builds richness and structure toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah, Alicante and other varieties. Drink now through 2030. 200 cases made.

The 2019 Old Hill Heritage Wine is fascinating, as it captures all the signatures of this site, but with the smaller scale that is typical of the vintage. Sweet, perfumed aromatics and silky tannins frame this exquisitely beautiful, vivid heritage wine. Old Hill is a classic Sonoma ranch planted with a Zinfandel-based field blend that in this case includes more than 30 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Another cuvée from ancient vines (late 1800s), the 2019 Old Hill Ranch Heritage gives up a complex, medium to full-bodied, richly textured style as well as red plum fruits, notes of peppery herbs and dried flowers, ripe yet firm tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. I love the purity of fruit, and it’s going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Bedrock’s 2022 Rosé Ode to Lulu, a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah is one of the more complete Rosés readers will come across. Deep and beautifully layered, Ode to Lulu is a complex wine that will be at home either as an aperitif or as a companion at the dinner table. Rich, red-toned fruit, crushed flowers and subtle earthy notes all open effortlessly. (Antonio Galloni)

Composed of 60% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache, and a small dose of Syrah, the youthful salmon-hued 2022 Ode To Lulu Rose is fragrant with wild berries, wet stone, Mediterranean herbs, and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, with fresh balance, it will certainly have a few years ahead of it. Drink 2023–2028. (Audrey Frick)

All barrel fermented, the medium straw-colored 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma Valley is soft with tropical aromas as well as fresh herbs, mango skin, fresh peach, and wet stone. A medium bodied white, it boasts rounded fruit, a soft, stony texture, and fresh acidity without any harshness. A very attractive wine, it shows what great Sonoma Sauvignon can be all about. Spry and briary, this Zinfandel is fun to drink, with lively black cherry, licorice and dried sage flavors, which take on richness and cracked pepper accents toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2031. 4,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
Most of the fruit for the 2021 Zinfandel Old Vine comes from Sonoma. Ripe ruby hued, the wine is fresh with ripe berries and white pepper spice, as well as roses. Medium-bodied, with good structure, fresh acidity, and fine tannins, it has a fully dry style. It is an outstanding value and would also be an outstanding wine to pour by the glass. Drink it over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Cuvée Karatas is another fabulous white from Bedrock. This is the first year that includes Semillon from a Monte Rosso selection planted at Bedrock (68%) with Sauvignon Blanc from Judge and Uboldi (32%). If that sounds like a pretty appealing combination, well, it is. Rich, layered and light on its feet, the 2021 is dazzling. It’s one of the very best whites I have ever tasted from Bedrock. World class all the way. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
The 2021 Cuvee Karatas White Wine is 60% Semillon and the rest Sauvignon Blanc and leads with elegant and soft tropical aromas of guava, lemon oil, and jasmine green tea. Medium-bodied, with a soft, supple texture and a clean feel, it offers fresh citrus notes of white grapefruit, chive, and chalky earth. Drink 2023–2030. (Audrey Frick)

A deep but transparent red, the 2021 The Bedrock Heritage is about 50% Zinfandel and offers aromas of fresh pencil shavings, black cherry, roasted herbs, and fresh flowers. Full-bodied, it has fine sweet tannins and note of ripe berries, mocha, and turned soil. Drink over the next 10 years. (Audrey Frick)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023
Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Bedrock’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso, from one of the truly iconic vineyards in the United States, is fascinating to taste next to the Montecillo, as they are both hillside Cabernets. The Monte Rosso offers up a whole range of lifted, savory aromatics to play off its bright fruit. Blood orange, cinnamon, dried herbs and spice lend so much complexity and nuance. The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Evangelho Heritage Wine is rich, boisterous and super-expressive. Succulent black cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are front and center. There’s real weight and density here, yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2020 is dense and full of character. This year’s blend is mostly Zinfandel and Mataro.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso features baked berries, cherry cordial, spice cake and potpourri on the nose with touches of mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshingly tart and with a chewy backbone, it is wonderfully opulent and spicy on the palate with a long, earthy finish.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018
The 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is utterly sublime. Lifted, aromatically precise and nuanced, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is fabulous. Rose petal, blood orange, cranberry and raspberry notes give the Monte Rosso striking aromatic presence and brightness. Unfortunately, Bedrock, like all the other wineries that purchased grapes at Monte Rosso, no longer have access to the fruit off this historic ranch. Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell certainly chose a strong vintage as their last. The 2016 is sublime.

Comes at you like a surly teenager but wins you over with power and personality. Cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to brooding blackberry, orange zest and bay leaf flavors that finish with big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2026. 300 cases made.
