Beaucastel’s 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is shaping up as a blend of 30% each Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 10% each Counoise and Syrah, plus 20% other permitted varieties, including a healthy proportion of white grapes. Complex and red-fruited, with hints of flowers and garrigue, it’s expansive and richly textured on the palate, finishing long and silky. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape was scheduled to be bottled the week after this tasting, and it’s the usual blend of 35% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Counoise, and other permitted varieties. While the estate compares this to their 2016, it reminds me slightly of their 1990 and has a wonderful perfume of red, blue, and black fruits, as well as sappy garrigue, saddle leather, and ground pepper. It’s beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, has a good sense of freshness, and fine tannins, as well as a tight, focused style on the palate that bodes well for longevity. It deserves 7–8 years of bottle age and should be long-lived. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is the usual 100% Grenache that was brought up all in demi-muids. More dried strawberries, blackberries, loamy earth, spice, and hints of saddle leather emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, has ripe tannins, and is just a heavenly Grenache in the making. I don’t see it hitting the same heights as the 2007, but it’s certainly up with the top players of the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
Drawn from three plots of old-vine Grenache (70- to 80-year-old vines), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis looks to be another fantastic example of this cuvée, bursting with cherries and raspberries and nuanced by delicate sprigs of garrigue and hints of roses and black tea. Medium to full-bodied and silken in texture on the palate, it finishes with tremendous length and subtly building tannins. It’s one 2020 that could take a few years to come around. (Joe Czerwinski)

Bottled a month ago, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet sports a vivid ruby hue and is a blend of 30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, with the balance Cinsault. It’s a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has lots of ripe red and blue fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue and leather. Drink this juicy, elegant Côtes Du Rhône over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel continues this cuvée's hot streak. A blend of approximately 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, with 10% Carignan, it boasts attractive floral overtones, hints of crushed stone and ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and impressively silky for such a young wine, it should be drinkable upon release and for at least a decade thereafter. (Joe Czerwinski)

Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape is a huge success in the vintage, and while it shows the softer, more supple style of the vintage, it doesn’t lack depth, density, or complexity. Black raspberries, spring flowers, lit gunpowder, and peppery garrigue all give way to a medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced 2020 that’s already hard to resist. This cuvée always shines for its elegance, and the 2020 is no exception. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, which is still resting in foudre, is primarily Grenache from the sandy portion of the La Crau lieu-dit (although it now also includes grapes from a new parcel in the northern part of the appellation). Kirsch, flowers, spice, and peppery garrigue notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, nicely structured 2020 that’s going to benefit from 2–3 years of bottle age. It’s clearly an outstanding bottle of wine in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

I continue to love what vigneron Philippe Bravay accomplishes from his estate in the northern part of the appellation, and his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another finesse-driven, incredibly beautiful expression of this magical region. Based on 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, it was partially destemmed and brought up in equal parts stainless steel and concrete tanks. It offers a huge perfume of ripe strawberries and red fruits as well as sappy flowers, garrigue, and Provençal herbs. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, balanced, incredibly seamless Châteauneuf du Pape with no hard edges, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. I’d be a buyer. This will put a smile on your face any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4–5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)

An alluring wine, with a mix of ripe damson plum, red currant and spice cake wrapped around a core of firm iron. Reveals clove and apple wood smoke that add depth and warmth, and the long finish is powered by minerality and grainy tannins. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2024 through 2035. 500 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
