Clos du Mont-Olivet Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018 / 750 ml.

I unfortunately wasn’t able to taste any 2019s but both 2018s showed beautifully. I loved the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape and it certainly makes the most of the vintage. Revealing a ruby hue as well as textbook, traditional notes of sweet kirsch and darker currants, peppery garrigue, saddle leather, and herbed de Provence, it’s medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and the depth and balance to keep for 15 years or more. It’s beautifully done. The blend of the traditional cuvée is 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Picpoul, Vaccarèse, and Counoise, brought up mostly in ancient foudre. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Shimmering ruby-red. Vibrant raspberry, cherry and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of garrigue and baking spices. Juicy, palate-coating red and blue fruit and candied lavender flavors smoothly blend depth and energy. Shows fine definition and strong persistence on an impressively long, floral- and spice-driven finish framed by smooth, slowly building tannins.

Moving to the reds and starting with the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, and other permitted varieties), this wine has a terrific sense of purity and elegance in its black and blue fruits, sappy flowers, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium-bodied, finesse-oriented wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length. This is a classic, traditional cuvée done brilliantly. While it has the upfront style of the vintage front and center, it’s still going to evolve beautifully on its balance and purity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
Decadently ripe, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape combines hints of garrigue, raspberries, black cherries and dark chocolate on the nose. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied, plush and creamy textured without coming across as heavy, finishing supple and long. While some may find it over the top, for me, it retains a sense of balance in the tension between the sense of ripeness and its delicate herbal nuances. It won’t be terribly long-lived but should drink at its delicious best over the next 6–8 years.

Limpid ruby-red. Spice-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by building floral and mineral nuances. Alluringly sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering lively black raspberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and baking spice flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes supple and long, with lingering floral and spice notes and subtle tannins that lend shape and gentle grip.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (only 30% destemmed) is more powerful than the Chaupin cuvée and has a rocking bouquet of blackberries, cassis, scorched earth, graphite, and licorice, that develops beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and layered on the palate, it has integrated acidity, present yet ripe tannins, and a beautiful finish. Pure class, it’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Dark violet. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red/blue fruits, incense and exotic spices, and a floral accent builds as the wine opens up. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering lush black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that are energized by a core of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and solid, spicy thrust on a long, sweet finish framed by velvety tannins.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Showing nicely, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes shows the softer, elegant style of the vintage yet still has ample depth of fruit as well as a classic profile. Notes or red and black fruits, peppery herbs, nori, licorice, and scorched earth all give way to a full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2018. It’s already hard to resist, with silky tannins and no hard edges, and it says weightless on the palate. It’s not going to be the longest-lived version of this cuvée but it’s going to put a smile on your face anytime over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. High-pitched, mineral- and smoke-tinged red and dark berry and potpourri scents are complemented by notes of licorice and baking spices. Silky and open-knit, offering sweet raspberry, cherry, and lavender pastille flavors that show fine delineation and tighten up steadily with air. Shows solid, spicy thrust and energetic lift on the impressively long finish, which is given shape by harmonious tannins.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
A rich, mouthfilling effort, Vieux Donjon’s 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape is concentrated and velvety, showing plenty of power and weight. Ripe cherries and raspberries are dusted with clove and star anise, then joined by hints of leather and cocoa on the long, intense finish. This is a beautiful Vieux Donjon that should drink well for more than a decade.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
This estate always makes a traditionally styled wine and their 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape is no exception, revealing a medium ruby/purple color as well as spicy, gamey notes of red and black currants, smoked game, peppery garrigue, and new saddle leather. Medium to full-bodied, with terrific elegance (which is the vintage), a gorgeous texture, and outstanding length, this is classic, old-school Châteauneuf du Pape done clean, balanced, and brilliantly! It’s going to evolve nicely for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
A beautiful wine in the vintage, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as stunning notes of blackcurrants, crushed violets, ground pepper, and cured meats. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it has ripe, present tannins and a great finish. It doesn’t have the sheer richness found in a top vintage, yet it’s complex, classic, layered, and long. In short, it’s a beautiful wine that makes the most of this vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
Stylish, with a mix of red cherry, raspberry and Damson purée flavors swirling together. Light garrigue, juniper and warm brick hints develop through the finish, adding textural range and overall length. Should age nicely too. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2021 through 2035. 4,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.

Black raspberries, cassis, spice, and Provençal garrigue and meaty notes all emerge from the 2018 Rasteau Marc. A blend of 50% Grenache and 25% each of Mourvèdre and Syrah, brought up in demi-muids, it’s medium to full-bodied and nicely textured, with beautiful purity and a distinct sense of elegance paired with richness. JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
The 2018 Cairanne is another winner from the talented Romain Roche that should snatched up by savvy readers. Beautiful cassis and black raspberry fruits, notes of crushed flowers and violets, medium to full body, and a ripe, sexy texture all make for a quintessential Cairanne that’s going to provide tons of pleasure over the coming 5–7 years.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The raspberry and garrigue-scented 2018 Cairanne is an early-drinking charmer. Loaded with red berries, but with enough savory, herbal complexities on the long, softly dusty finish to keep it interesting, this medium to full-bodied effort may be drunk with pleasure over the next 4–5 years. Hints of smoke, caramel and crushed stone accent plum and blackberry flavors in this wine. Made from 70% Grenache augmented by 25% Syrah and 5% Carignan, it’s an opulent, easy-drinking red with a fresh, mineral finish. Best enjoyed now–2025. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

Vivid ruby. Fragrant cherry and red berry scents pick up suggestions of licorice and lavender with aeration. Spicy, concentrated and smooth on the palate, offering appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Finishes sweet and quite long, with velvety tannins framing lingering cherry and floral notes.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The raspberry and garrigue-scented 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Miocene has turned out as well I hoped after last year’s visit. Medium to full-bodied, it’s tightened up a bit and shows more dusty tannin on the finish than I recall, but that should just serve to extend its drinking window through at at least 2030.
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Miocène can be thought of as the entry-level Châteauneuf from this estate and is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre brought up in a mix of tank and neutral, older barrels. Impressive notes of mulled black cherries, darker currants, chocolaty herbs, and pepper all emerge from the glass and this medium to full-bodied 2018 has a great mid-palate, ample depth and richness, and sweet tannins. It’s beautifully done and just about seamless on the palate, with the forward, already delicious style of the vintage front and center. enjoy bottles anytime over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The deeper hued 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet checks in as a blend of 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah that saw plenty of stems and aging mostly in foudre, with a small part in demi-muids and barrique. Straight-up sensational notes of blackcurrants, ground pepper, garrigue, leather, and graphite emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, dense, powerful mouthfeel, building tannins, and a brilliant finish. It’s built for the long haul, and along with the 2016, it’s one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this talented family. Hide bottles for 7–8 years and enjoy over the following 20–25+. Dark in profile, but very seductive, with cassis, crushed plum and cherry reduction notes carried by a substantial yet very silky structure. Light floral, incense, black tea and warm earth details score the finish. Tantalizing now for its mouthfeel and expressiveness, but there’s no rush at all. Drink now through 2038. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Brilliant violet. A highly perfumed nose displays mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berries, licorice and a hint of potpourri. Sappy cherry, black raspberry and spicecake flavors show vibrant lift and take on floral pastille and botanical herb nuances as the wine opens up. In a lively style, finishing sweet, floral and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding final grip.

Full, vivid ruby. Expansive, mineral- and herb-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by hints of succulent herbs and flowers. Concentrated yet lithe on the palate, offering sappy, finely detailed red and dark berry flavors and powerful back-end lift. This is solid, with a still-tight core of black cherry and dark plum fruit liberally laced with warm stone, garrigue, tar and alder notes. Plenty grippy, with a smoldering tobacco accent through the finish. Best from 2022 through 2035. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported.

The flagship is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Du Papet and it’s based on 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah that see plenty of stems and aging mostly in demi-muids. Coming from the Bois Dauphin, La Crau, and Montalivet lieux-dits which are mostly sandy terroirs, the idea with this cuvée is always to make a more age-worthy, traditional wine that rewards bottle age. Lovers of old-school Châteauneuf will adore this 2018 and it has a captivating bouquet of red and black currants, peppery garrigue, spring flowers, and rose hips. Already perfumed, complex, and nuanced, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky, elegant texture, ripe yet nicely balanced tannins, and a great finish. It’s a wine that’s going to age on its balance and purity more so than power and richness. It’s going to pick up even more nuance with 4–6 years of bottle age and continue putting a smile on your face over the following 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Bright ruby. Heady, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries, incense and lavender are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Conveys an appealing blend of richness and energy and closes with fine clarity, well-knit tannins and strong, spicy persistence.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4–5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
