Where It's From
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Boysenberries, blueberries and hints of redder fruit emerge on the nose of the 2019 Cotes du Rhone les Claux, a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a plump, generous feel and a silky texture accompanied by a gorgeous sensation of freshness and lip-smacking acidity on the long finish.
I loved the 2018 version of this wine and the 2019 Cotes Du Rhône Les Claux is certainly cut from the same cloth. Based on a mix of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, its deep purple color is followed by a rich, meaty, Provençal wine that has lots of mulled red and black fruits, notes of black licorice and black pepper, medium to full-bodied richness, and a clean, lengthy finish. This young, concentrated Cotes du Rhône is ideal for drinking over the coming 5–6 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The smaller production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Puy Rolland is all Grenache from sandy soils raised in foudre. It’s slightly lighter hued compared to the other cuvées and offers a classic perfume of wild strawberries, iodine, violets, and Provençal spice. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this is Grenache at its most feminine and elegant, with light tannins, a seamless, elegant texture, and outstanding length. It’s going to benefit from just 2–3 years of bottle age but should evolve for 15 years on its balance, harmony, and purity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Also pure Southern Rhône goodness, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has classy notes of red and blue fruits, candied orange, flowers, peppery garrigue, and loads of Asian spices. Beautifully textured, silky, and elegant on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, a notable sense of freshness, and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This is ripe, juicy and mouthfilling, with lots of enticing raspberry, boysenberry and fig compote flavors enlivened with anise, fruitcake and mulling spice accents. Shows good energy through the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.
The base 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Cristia is a terrific effort well worth seeking out. Black cherries, blackberries, ground pepper, orange blossom, and assorted spice notes all emerge on the nose, and this puppy is up-front, medium to full-bodied, and ready to go, with a soft, delicious style ideal for drinking over the coming 7–8 years. Full, vivid ruby. Expansive, mineral- and herb-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by hints of succulent herbs and flowers. Concentrated yet lithe on the palate, offering sappy, finely detailed red and dark berry flavors and powerful back-end lift. The long, spicy finish features resonating floral and red berry notes and smooth tannins that emerge slowly and steadily.
Kirsch, linzer and cherry purée notes stream through in this vibrant and expressive offering, displaying a lovely, silky feel from start to finish. Light iron and shiso hints filter through at the very end, adding range and subtle persistence. Drink now through 2034. 1,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.
Moving to the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, this little gem should be snatched up by readers, as it’s as textbook as they come. Ruby/plum-hued, with a medium to full-bodied, round, elegant mouthfeel, it has ample red and black fruits, notes of peppery herbs and licorice, supple tannins, and a great finish. A wonderful 2019, it will have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

I unfortunately wasn’t able to taste any 2019s but both 2018s showed beautifully. I loved the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape and it certainly makes the most of the vintage. Revealing a ruby hue as well as textbook, traditional notes of sweet kirsch and darker currants, peppery garrigue, saddle leather, and herbed de Provence, it’s medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and the depth and balance to keep for 15 years or more. It’s beautifully done. The blend of the traditional cuvée is 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Picpoul, Vaccarèse, and Counoise, brought up mostly in ancient foudre. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Shimmering ruby-red. Vibrant raspberry, cherry and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of garrigue and baking spices. Juicy, palate-coating red and blue fruit and candied lavender flavors smoothly blend depth and energy. Shows fine definition and strong persistence on an impressively long, floral- and spice-driven finish framed by smooth, slowly building tannins.
Moving to the reds and starting with the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, and other permitted varieties), this wine has a terrific sense of purity and elegance in its black and blue fruits, sappy flowers, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium-bodied, finesse-oriented wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length. This is a classic, traditional cuvée done brilliantly. While it has the upfront style of the vintage front and center, it’s still going to evolve beautifully on its balance and purity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Decadently ripe, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape combines hints of garrigue, raspberries, black cherries and dark chocolate on the nose. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied, plush and creamy textured without coming across as heavy, finishing supple and long. While some may find it over the top, for me, it retains a sense of balance in the tension between the sense of ripeness and its delicate herbal nuances. It won’t be terribly long-lived but should drink at its delicious best over the next 6–8 years.
Limpid ruby-red. Spice-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by building floral and mineral nuances. Alluringly sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering lively black raspberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and baking spice flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes supple and long, with lingering floral and spice notes and subtle tannins that lend shape and gentle grip.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4–5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
An alluring wine, with a mix of ripe damson plum, red currant and spice cake wrapped around a core of firm iron. Reveals clove and apple wood smoke that add depth and warmth, and the long finish is powered by minerality and grainy tannins. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2024 through 2035. 500 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

This is solid, with a still-tight core of black cherry and dark plum fruit liberally laced with warm stone, garrigue, tar and alder notes. Plenty grippy, with a smoldering tobacco accent through the finish. Best from 2022 through 2035. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported.
The flagship is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Du Papet and it’s based on 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah that see plenty of stems and aging mostly in demi-muids. Coming from the Bois Dauphin, La Crau, and Montalivet lieux-dits which are mostly sandy terroirs, the idea with this cuvée is always to make a more age-worthy, traditional wine that rewards bottle age. Lovers of old-school Châteauneuf will adore this 2018 and it has a captivating bouquet of red and black currants, peppery garrigue, spring flowers, and rose hips. Already perfumed, complex, and nuanced, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky, elegant texture, ripe yet nicely balanced tannins, and a great finish. It’s a wine that’s going to age on its balance and purity more so than power and richness. It’s going to pick up even more nuance with 4–6 years of bottle age and continue putting a smile on your face over the following 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Bright ruby. Heady, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries, incense and lavender are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Palate-staining raspberry and cherry liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors pick up deeper licorice and cola notes on the back half. Conveys an appealing blend of richness and energy and closes with fine clarity, well-knit tannins and strong, spicy persistence.
Scents of sun-warmed stones, asphalt and black olives emerge on the nose of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuvee du Papet. Full-bodied, savory and complex, with flavors of dark, plummy fruit, hints of roasted meat and dried spices, it’s supple in feel and long on the finish.

The deeper hued 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet checks in as a blend of 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah that saw plenty of stems and aging mostly in foudre, with a small part in demi-muids and barrique. Straight-up sensational notes of blackcurrants, ground pepper, garrigue, leather, and graphite emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, dense, powerful mouthfeel, building tannins, and a brilliant finish. It’s built for the long haul, and along with the 2016, it’s one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this talented family. Hide bottles for 7–8 years and enjoy over the following 20–25+. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Dark in profile, but very seductive, with cassis, crushed plum and cherry reduction notes carried by a substantial yet very silky structure. Light floral, incense, black tea and warm earth details score the finish. Tantalizing now for its mouthfeel and expressiveness, but there’s no rush at all. Drink now through 2038. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Brilliant violet. A highly perfumed nose displays mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berries, licorice and a hint of potpourri. Sappy cherry, black raspberry and spicecake flavors show vibrant lift and take on floral pastille and botanical herb nuances as the wine opens up. In a lively style, finishing sweet, floral and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding final grip.
