This is ripe, juicy and mouthfilling, with lots of enticing raspberry, boysenberry and fig compote flavors enlivened with anise, fruitcake and mulling spice accents. Shows good energy through the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

The base 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Cristia is a terrific effort well worth seeking out. Black cherries, blackberries, ground pepper, orange blossom, and assorted spice notes all emerge on the nose, and this puppy is up-front, medium to full-bodied, and ready to go, with a soft, delicious style ideal for drinking over the coming 7–8 years. The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL is pure magic and one of the most singular wines out there. Based on 65% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other varieties, it was only 30% destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. Where previous vintages of this beauty were almost over the top, the 2019 shows a more elegant, pure, balanced profile as well as incredible aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, herbes de Provence, ground pepper, violets, and other notes of Southern Rhône-like goodness. Incredibly powerful and opulent, it somehow manages to stay perfectly balanced, has a wonderful sense of freshness, silky yet substantial tannins, and an awesome finish. Unfortunately, there are just over 300 cases produced, so it won’t be easy to find, but this ranks with the all-time greats. It deserves 4–5 years of bottle age and should evolve for 30 years if well-stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Boysenberries, blueberries and hints of redder fruit emerge on the nose of the 2019 Cotes du Rhone les Claux, a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a plump, generous feel and a silky texture accompanied by a gorgeous sensation of freshness and lip-smacking acidity on the long finish.
JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
I loved the 2018 version of this wine and the 2019 Cotes Du Rhône Les Claux is certainly cut from the same cloth. Based on a mix of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, its deep purple color is followed by a rich, meaty, Provençal wine that has lots of mulled red and black fruits, notes of black licorice and black pepper, medium to full-bodied richness, and a clean, lengthy finish. This young, concentrated Cotes du Rhône is ideal for drinking over the coming 5–6 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

More cassis, morello cherry, Asian spice, and a beautiful sense of minerality and loamy earth emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources, a full-bodied, concentrated blend of 60% Grenache, 15% each of Cinsault and Syrah, and the balance Mourvèdre. Coming all from the estate’s sandy soils in the northern part of the appellation, this incredibly concentrated, textured wine has perfect balance, building tannins, and a great finish. Give this beauty another 4–5 years in the cellar and drink it over the following two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Starting off the 2019 barrel samples, the 2019 Gigondas reveals a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a rich, powerful, medium to full-bodied and concentrated style that carries lots of classic dark fruits, ground pepper, and scorched earth-like aromas and flavors. This rich, dense 2019 will reward 3–5 years of bottle age and have two decades of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Also not yet bottled, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Renaissance is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre that’s from the southern portions of the Cristia lieu-dit and the Font du Loup lieu-dit, both being sandy soils. It has a slightly modern vibe due to the new oak but boasts classic Provençal notes of gamey meats, ground pepper, garrigue, and woodsmoke. Pure, full-bodied, and seamless on the palate, it’s going to offer pleasure in its youth but warrants 2–4 years of bottle age. It will keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

There’s so much tar character in the nose it smells like the freeway is melting. However, the expansive palate is properly dry and rather fresh. Crisp finish. A cuvee of 60% grenache and 40% mourvedre. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Renaissance is a bigger, richer wine based off 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it has rock star purity in its cassis and ripe blackberry fruits as well as spicy oak, roasted meats, toasted spice, and chocolate aromas and flavors. A more elegant, polished wine than usual, it already has some up-front appeal. It’s going to integrate its oak élevage with 2–4 years of bottle age and should have 10–15 years of prime drinking thereafter. The purity and texture here are spot on. (Jeb Dunnuck)
