Domaine de Cristia Chateauneuf-du-Pape Renaissance 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 58957

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Renaissance is a bigger, richer wine based off 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it has rock star purity in its cassis and ripe blackberry fruits as well as spicy oak, roasted meats, toasted spice, and chocolate aromas and flavors. A more elegant, polished wine than usual, it already has some up-front appeal. It’s going to integrate its oak élevage with 2–4 years of bottle age and should have 10–15 years of prime drinking thereafter. The purity and texture here are spot on. (Jeb Dunnuck)

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

This is ripe, juicy and mouthfilling, with lots of enticing raspberry, boysenberry and fig compote flavors enlivened with anise, fruitcake and mulling spice accents. Shows good energy through the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

The base 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Cristia is a terrific effort well worth seeking out. Black cherries, blackberries, ground pepper, orange blossom, and assorted spice notes all emerge on the nose, and this puppy is up-front, medium to full-bodied, and ready to go, with a soft, delicious style ideal for drinking over the coming 7–8 years. Also not yet bottled, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Renaissance is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre that’s from the southern portions of the Cristia lieu-dit and the Font du Loup lieu-dit, both being sandy soils. It has a slightly modern vibe due to the new oak but boasts classic Provençal notes of gamey meats, ground pepper, garrigue, and woodsmoke. Pure, full-bodied, and seamless on the palate, it’s going to offer pleasure in its youth but warrants 2–4 years of bottle age. It will keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A sultry, extroverted style, oozing raspberry coulis and smoked red currant flavors set against cigar box and iron underpinnings. This has a suave texture, with plenty of decadence reined in by the fine tannins and notes of wet earth and singed garrigue. Drinking beautifully now, this will also hold up very well in the cellar. Drink now through 2035. 200 cases made, 50 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The pale ruby-colored 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Renaissance is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. It opens with aromas of very ripe and occasionally cooked red and black fruits, dried herbs and a cloud of oak derived notes such as cloves and vanilla. This is not surprising, as it aged for 18 months in a combination of demi-muids and new oak barriques. Full-bodied and rich, the 2020 Renaissance is a well-structured, modern red which requires a few more years in bottle. (Nicolas Greinacher)

There’s so much tar character in the nose it smells like the freeway is melting. However, the expansive palate is properly dry and rather fresh. Crisp finish. A cuvee of 60% grenache and 40% mourvedre. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah aged in 50% new oak) is similarly deep purple and offers a straight-up stunning bouquet of ripe cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with chocolate, Asian spices, cured meats, and new leather. A powerful, concentrated, rich 2019, it has a great mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is top notch, and while it’s unquestionably a modern style Châteauneuf, the oak is nicely integrated and I suspect will disappear completely with 5–6 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep violet. Oak-spice- and mineral-tinged aromas of ripe cherry and black currant are joined by garrigue and floral notes that build in the glass. Alluringly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy red and blue fruit preserve, succulent herb and licorice flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. A vanilla nuance emerges on an impressively long, penetrating finish firmed by gently chewy tannins.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
Although matured in 50% new oak, a core of pristine black cherry and cassis flavors entices in this blend of Grenache (50%), Mourvèdre (30%) and Syrah (20%). Supple in mouthfeel and accented by dustings of cocoa powder and Christmas spice, it finishes with charry, gripping tannins. Approachable already, the wine should improve through 2035.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Warm in feel, with a gush of plum puree and blackberry paste flavors, liberally laced with black licorice and roasted alder notes. A solidly built, modern version, with a nice tug of warm earth on the back end. Best from 2022 through 2034. 700 cases made, 280 cases imported.

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is another tour de force from this estate, who are clearly firing on all cylinders today. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that’s brought up in a mix of foudre and barrel, its deep purple hue is followed by a rich, powerful, full-bodied wine offering ample cassis and darker berry fruits, notes of ground pepper, cured meats, and scorched earth, ripe, building tannins, incredible balance, and a great finish. It’s going to flirt with perfection at maturity, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it still drinking brilliantly at age 30. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Lovers of brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape should snatch up bottles of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes mostly from the northeastern sector of the appellation, from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as from the La Crau lieu-dit. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. Give bottles 2–3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 20+ years or more.

Warm and lush in feel, with steeped dark plum, blackberry and açai berry fruit flavors infused with singed savory, licorice root and warm earth notes, offering a late echo of bittersweet Valrhona chocolate. Good underlying grip keeps this honest enough too. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035. 1,200 cases made, 400 cases imported.

Shimmering ruby-red. Expressive, smoke- and mineral-accented red fruit and floral scents show fine definition and pick up a spicy accent with air. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry and candied lavender flavors that deepen slowly through the midpalate. Shows solid, spicy thrust on a long, smooth finish framed by velvety tannins. This is an exceptional example of an entry-level Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Gorgeous black raspberries, strawberry, spring flowers, incense, and assorted Provençal spice notes all emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a medium to full-bodied, incredibly pure, utterly seamless 2019 that excels on all accounts. Madame Ferando continues to knock it out of the park in just about every vintage, and this is well worth seeking out. The base cuvée is 85% Grenache and 5% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, aged all in concrete tanks. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2021
Melted licorice, plum sauce, cherry purée and black tea notes all meld into a silky, suave and seamlessly-textured wine that leaves a subtle echo of lavender at the very end. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 8,304 cases made, 692 cases imported.
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Starting with the classic cuvee, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a sexy, seamless 2019 that has lots of black raspberry and cherry fruits, loads of peppery garrigue and spice, medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s smoking classic cuvée to enjoy over the coming 10–15 years.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis comes from more sandy soils and is all Grenache raised in demi-muids. Wild strawberries, cherries, flowery incense, lavender, and loamy earth all make an appearance, and it’s full-bodied, has a deep layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another wine that needs a few years of bottle age, but it will deliver the goods over the following 15+. This is Grenache at its most elegant and seamless. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
One of my favorite wines in the world, the Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis is all old vine Grenache from the Colombis lieu-dit located on the western side of the appellation. The 2019 sports a healthy ruby/purple color as well as a classic Grenache bouquet of black raspberries, herbes de Provence, peppery spice, and flowery incense. Already complex, it’s full-bodied, has a wonderful sense of purity, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This is power paired with elegance, and few wines do it so well. It’s going to drink beautifully for 15-20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Deep, shimmering ruby. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, incense, cola and garrigue qualities on the finely detailed nose. Palate-staining cherry pie, raspberry, boysenberry, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors show uncanny energy for their depth. The spice and floral notes dominate a seriously long, sappy finish framed by velvety, well-knit tannins.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2021
So silky this version seems expressive at first, but the core of cassis, cherry purée and raspberry fruit is tightly coiled, with both chalk and iron notes having their say, stretching out in unison through the finish. Black tea and garrigue hints peek in as well, which is a sign of what’s to come after cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,720 cases made, 310 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Réserve Auguste Favier is based on 85% Grenache and 15% Cinsault, all from the Les Serres lieu-dit, and was brought up all in demi-muids. Black raspberries, spring flowers, pepper, and loamy earth and mineral nuances all make an appearance here, and this flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape has incredible finesse and elegance while still bringing beautiful richness and length. It’s not the biggest, richest wine in the vintage, but it shines for its complexity and seamlessness. It’s pure class. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Opaque garnet. Expressive cherry, black raspberry and incense aromas are complemented by building floral and exotic spice nuances. Sappy, seamless and penetrating in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet red and dark berry liqueur and candied lavender flavors that deepen as the wine open up. Shows resonating red fruit character on the wonderfully persistent, floral-driven finish, which is framed by polished, interwoven tannins.
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Always the most elegant wine on the lineup, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is mostly Grenache yet has a solid amount of Cinsault, and it can include a splash of Mourvèdre in some vintages. This beauty offers deeper, richer notes of redcurrants, bouquet garni, and earth, full-bodied richness, a smoky, meaty character, plenty of mid-palate stuffing, and a great finish.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
This has a seriously endowed and remarkably pure core of cassis and cherry purée, underscored by light leather, red licorice and violet notes that emerge steadily as they move through the silky finish. Power and grace. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2036. 7,920 cases made, 660 cases imported.
