Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin 2020 / 750 ml.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It’s never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with “a Grenache lover’s dream.” This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin is mostly Grenache sourced from the northern part of the appellation (a small part comes from La Crau), and it was 70% destemmed and brought up in foudre and tank. A deeply hued barrel sample, it offers lots of cassis and pure black raspberry fruits, medium to full body, incredible purity, great tannins, and a blockbuster finish. This is another regal, flawlessly put together Grenache from this talented team. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Ripe but very focused, with a streamlined feel to the mix of raspberry, red currant and bitter cherry fruit flavors. Reveals a racy apple wood note coursing underneath, while licorice, black tea and graphite fill in through the finish. Best from 2023 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 504 cases imported. The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Black raspberries and flowers gently intertwine on the nose of the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige, a Grenache-dominated blend drawn from the lieux-dits of les Brusquières and Cabrières. Full-bodied and silky, it’s dense and rich yet finishes fresh, adding seemingly contradictory hints of dark chocolate. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Dark and brooding, this reveals layers of black fruit edged in iron and smoke. Tightly coiled on the palate, with highlights of violet, tea, forest floor and cumin emerging with time. Slightly grippy tannins hold firm, and this will benefit from a few years in the cellar for the full range of flavors to open up. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Vaccarèse. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,000 cases made, 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Domaine du Cayron Gigondas 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59721

VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
Dark magenta. Vibrant cherry, raspberry and lavender aromas show excellent clarity and a spicy white pepper hint. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, it displays expansive red fruit and spicecake flavors with a subtle touch of candied licorice. Closes sappy and impressively long, with resonating floral and red fruit notes and gentle tannins that build slowly. (Josh Raynolds)
JD91+91–93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022
I always find the wines of Domaine du Cayron to be singular and exotic, and I love them, but admittedly, they’re not for everyone. Their 2020 Gigondas checks in as 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre that was destemmed and aged all in very old foudre. Cassis, blueberries, bay leaf, basil, and exotic flowers notes all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with wonderful purity of fruit and a notable sense of freshness. It’s a beautiful barrel sample from this family. (Jeb Dunnuck)

From higher elevation parcels and mostly Grenache, the 2020 Ventoux Edition 1912M offers pretty strawberry and cherry fruits as well as classic Southern Rhône notes of peppery herbs, spice, and licorice. It has a beautiful sense of minerality on the palate, is medium-bodied, balanced, and just a beautiful wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Vibrant black cherries, mulberries, peppery herbs, and spice are just some of the nuances in the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, an utterly classic Châteauneuf du Pape that’s medium to full-bodied, has the vintage’s seamless profile, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This beautiful, quintessential effort can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 years or more. The 2020 is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, brought up mostly in concrete tank, but with 20% in tronconique tanks and 5% in old barrels. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
Tasted from tank, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looks to be another highly successful vintage. It boasts this cuvée’s usual complex florals allied to red raspberries and cherries, but it doesn’t come across quite as concentrated or rich as the 2019 version. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in feel, with a sense of charm and easy elegance. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Not yet bottled, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a rich, full-bodied, concentrated, yet beautifully balanced style as well as the classic freshness and purity of the vintage. It has textbook notes of red and black berry fruits, violets, peppery garrigue, and orange blossom, with silky tannins and nicely integrated acidity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Incorporating 30% stems and brought up in foudre and demi-muid, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin is just a gorgeous wine that offers a perfumed bouquet of kirsch, blueberries, spring flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. It’s elegant and medium to full-bodied, with the purity of the vintage and a great finish. It’s not going to match the top vintages of this cuvée, but it’s going to drink spectacularly well in its youth and evolve nicely for 10–15 years.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Another wine that displays the vintage profile, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin reveals a translucent medium ruby color as well as pure Grenache notes of kirsch and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and toasted spice-like aromas and flavors. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. I’m inclined to recommend drinking this in its first decade of life, but I do love its balance and it has ripe tannins, so I expect it will actually evolve gracefully for a solid 15 years or more. It’s a pretty, elegant, classy wine that I would be thrilled to drink. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Brilliant ruby. A highly expressive bouquet evokes Chambord, cherry cola, smoky minerals and licorice, and a floral note builds as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and energetic in style, offering palate-staining raspberry, cherry pie and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight and become spicier with air. Delivers a suave blend of richness and finesse and finishes spicy, focused and very long, leaving repeating floral and red fruit notes behind.

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is another tour de force from this estate, who are clearly firing on all cylinders today. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that’s brought up in a mix of foudre and barrel, its deep purple hue is followed by a rich, powerful, full-bodied wine offering ample cassis and darker berry fruits, notes of ground pepper, cured meats, and scorched earth, ripe, building tannins, incredible balance, and a great finish. It’s going to flirt with perfection at maturity, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it still drinking brilliantly at age 30. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Lovers of brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape should snatch up bottles of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes mostly from the northeastern sector of the appellation, from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as from the La Crau lieu-dit. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. Give bottles 2–3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 20+ years or more.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
Warm and lush in feel, with steeped dark plum, blackberry and açai berry fruit flavors infused with singed savory, licorice root and warm earth notes, offering a late echo of bittersweet Valrhona chocolate. Good underlying grip keeps this honest enough too. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035. 1,200 cases made, 400 cases imported.

Even better, and flirting with perfection, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige Blanc is 60% Roussanne and 20% each of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, aged in 50% new demi-muids. Truly sensational notes of tangerines, quince, white flowers, smoke, and crushed stone emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, with a Grand Cru Burgundy-like sense of minerality, perfect balance, and a great finish. There are fewer than 200 cases produced, but this is world class in every way. It too will evolve for 20–25+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

I loved the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a classic Southern Rhône readers will love to have in their cellars. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant, and even pretty, it has textbook red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, violets, and spice-like aromas and flavors. It’s always interesting when tasting through the wines from this estate to see the change in the tannins and just overall level of elegance when you move from their Côtes du Rhône to their Châteauneuf du Papes, and this is unquestionably worth seeking out and cellaring. It can be drunk any time over the coming 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Leading off the 2019 Châteauneuf du Papes, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a ruby/purple, almost opaque hue to go with a beautifully Provençal, medium to full-bodied style as well as classy notes of peppery garrigue, spiced meat, black raspberries, and jammy blackberries. Nicely textured, with a terrific mid-palate as well as a great finish, this is a rock-solid, classic, traditional cuvée from this estate that will be approachable with short-term cellaring and evolve for 15–20 years or more.

I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2–3 years and enjoy over the following 15–20. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2021
This Grenache is sourced from the sandy soils of two prized vineyards, La Janasse and La Crau. Redolent of rose petals, smoky tea leaves and black cherry, the deeply penetrating wine pulsates through a long, long finish. Matured 12 months in large-format wood, it’s pure in fruit and satiny on the palate. Stunning young, the wine should gain complexity through at least 2040 and hold much further still.
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin looks to be a magical wine in the making. It has everything you could want from this region as well as from Grenache. Revealing a medium ruby/purple, almost opaque color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, loamy soil, peppery garrigue, and flowers, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. This is one of those incredible wines that delivers serious intensity and richness yet stays weightless and is as elegant as they come. It’s going to be approachable with just 2–3 years of bottle age yet will have 20 years or more of longevity.

The classic 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this team is a winner, offering a medium to full-bodied, finesse-driven style as well as terrific aromatics of darker berries, raspberries, garrigue, and flowers, with a kiss of background peppery spice. The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (only 30% destemmed) is more powerful than the Chaupin cuvée and has a rocking bouquet of blackberries, cassis, scorched earth, graphite, and licorice, that develops beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and layered on the palate, it has integrated acidity, present yet ripe tannins, and a beautiful finish. Pure class, it’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark violet. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red/blue fruits, incense and exotic spices, and a floral accent builds as the wine opens up. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering lush black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that are energized by a core of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and solid, spicy thrust on a long, sweet finish framed by velvety tannins.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Showing nicely, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes shows the softer, elegant style of the vintage yet still has ample depth of fruit as well as a classic profile. Notes or red and black fruits, peppery herbs, nori, licorice, and scorched earth all give way to a full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2018. It’s already hard to resist, with silky tannins and no hard edges, and it says weightless on the palate. It’s not going to be the longest-lived version of this cuvée but it’s going to put a smile on your face anytime over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
