Also a true gem of a wine, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes includes all three terroirs of Charbonnière, Esqueirons and Galimardes and is all Grenache. It’s a ripe, opulent, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with notes of raspberries, blueberries, Provençal herbs, violets, and flowers. It’s a big, exuberant Grenache offering sweet tannins, a broad, mouth-filling texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes boasts a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a heavenly nose of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, flowery incense, and both red and black fruits. Delivering incredible elegance as well as full-bodied power, it offers silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Two to three years of bottle age are going to be warranted, and it’s going to have two decades of overall longevity. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape in the making!

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Beautiful violets, wildflowers, Asian spices, lavender, and Bing cherry fruits all soar from the glass of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape. This full-bodied, beautifully textured, seamless 2019 brings the richness of the vintage while staying light on its feet, elegant, and perfectly balanced. While the acidity is quite low (I’m sure the pH is quite high), this will age on its balance and concentration. Hats off to Philippe Bravey for another singular Châteauneuf du Pape that readers will love to have in their cellars. As usual, the blend is 85% Grenache, with the balance other permitted varieties, brought up completely in tank. It can be drunk any time over the coming 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Matured entirely in concrete, this fresh-faced, exuberant red fills the palate with fleshy streaks of preserved red plum and red currant flavors. A velvet textured but crisply balanced blend of 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Cinsault, it’s irresistible for its youthful, juicy fruit profile but elevated too by hints of crushed basalt and a singe of black pepper on the finish. Drink now–2027 at least.

The young vine release from this great estate, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Calvaire has a beautiful Grenache nose of ripe strawberries and raspberries as well as notes of spice-box, garrigue, and flowers. This feminine, medium-bodied, seamless 2019 is balanced, lengthy, and already impossible to resist. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is another tour de force from this estate, who are clearly firing on all cylinders today. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that’s brought up in a mix of foudre and barrel, its deep purple hue is followed by a rich, powerful, full-bodied wine offering ample cassis and darker berry fruits, notes of ground pepper, cured meats, and scorched earth, ripe, building tannins, incredible balance, and a great finish. It’s going to flirt with perfection at maturity, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it still drinking brilliantly at age 30. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Lovers of brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape should snatch up bottles of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes mostly from the northeastern sector of the appellation, from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as from the La Crau lieu-dit. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. Give bottles 2–3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 20+ years or more.

Warm and lush in feel, with steeped dark plum, blackberry and açai berry fruit flavors infused with singed savory, licorice root and warm earth notes, offering a late echo of bittersweet Valrhona chocolate. Good underlying grip keeps this honest enough too. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035. 1,200 cases made, 400 cases imported.

The 2019 Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan A Fleur de Pampre is a mouthwatering blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan, all vinified in stainless steel and aged in concrete. Black raspberries and black olives mingle easily on the nose, followed by a medium-bodied palate framed by silky tannins and a juicy, vibrant finish. It should make for fun, casual drinking over the next 4–5 years.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Renaissance is a bigger, richer wine based off 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it has rock star purity in its cassis and ripe blackberry fruits as well as spicy oak, roasted meats, toasted spice, and chocolate aromas and flavors. A more elegant, polished wine than usual, it already has some up-front appeal. It’s going to integrate its oak élevage with 2–4 years of bottle age and should have 10–15 years of prime drinking thereafter. The purity and texture here are spot on. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Due to yields, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes doesn’t include any grapes from the Gallimardes lieu-dit, so this vintage only includes Charbonnière and Esqueirons grapes. As always, it’s 100% Grenache brought up in a mix of concrete tank and foudre. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a brilliant array of blueberries, violets, and pepper, and it’s full-bodied, has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I’d put it up with the top handful of wines in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This has power and concentration to the graphite- and smoke-edged black fig and currant flavors, with a steely mineral undercurrent and charred aniseed. In spite of the decadent fruit profile, this has a nice framework and lovely salinity driving freshness and impressive length. A blockbuster red with staying power. Best from 2024 through 2035. 490 cases made, 120 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Bottled in March, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (80% Grenache) was brought up in a mix of concrete (mostly) and foudre. It gives up sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, white flowers, graphite, candle wax, and spice. This rich, full-bodied, yet seamless Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a powerful, balanced style that’s going to keep for 15–20 years. It’s a gorgeous wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape weighs in at 15.5% alcohol by volume yet doesn’t show any heat. Blueberries, spice, cherries and stone fruit come in full-bodied, velvety waves and finish rich and long. This looks to be a stellar effort while the fruit lasts.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
Brilliant red. Highly perfumed red fruit liqueur, potpourri and Moroccan spice scents show impressive vivacity and focus. Sappy, alluringly sweet and precise, offering palate-staining raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of spicecake. Closes very long and smooth, displaying excellent focus, even tannins and emphatic, floral-tinged persistence.

JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
Vibrant black cherries, mulberries, peppery herbs, and spice are just some of the nuances in the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, an utterly classic Châteauneuf du Pape that’s medium to full-bodied, has the vintage’s seamless profile, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This beautiful, quintessential effort can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 years or more. The 2020 is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, brought up mostly in concrete tank, but with 20% in tronconique tanks and 5% in old barrels. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
Tasted from tank, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looks to be another highly successful vintage. It boasts this cuvée’s usual complex florals allied to red raspberries and cherries, but it doesn’t come across quite as concentrated or rich as the 2019 version. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in feel, with a sense of charm and easy elegance. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Not yet bottled, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a rich, full-bodied, concentrated, yet beautifully balanced style as well as the classic freshness and purity of the vintage. It has textbook notes of red and black berry fruits, violets, peppery garrigue, and orange blossom, with silky tannins and nicely integrated acidity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A good buy, the 2019 Côtes du Rhône from this great estate offers up a medium ruby color as well as an incredibly Provençal perfume of spiced red fruits, peppery garrigue, new saddle leather, and flowery incense. Medium-bodied, seamless, and elegant on the palate, it’s already hard to resist and should continue to put a smile on your face any time over the coming 2–4 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of raspberry and cherry liqueur, incense and pungent flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet impressively lively as well, offering intense red and dark berry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate and show superb clarity and minerally lift. Closes extremely long, focused and lively, with silky tannins framing the wine’s sweet fruit. This is about as good as a "basic" Châteauneuf gets.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a ripe, classic, Provençal bouquet of black raspberry, strawberries, and darker berry fruits as well as spice, garrigue, and pepper. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, yet all about finesse and elegance, it’s overflowing with character and charm. It’s going to shine for 15 years with no issues. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a deeper ruby/purple color as well as incredible Provençal notes of peppery garrigue, dried flowers, and jammy red and black berry fruits. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a great mid-palate, loads of building tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and a big finish. This is one smoking good, classic cuvée that savvy readers should snatch up. It will have 10–15 years of prime drinking.
