The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape also showed well, with a lighter, elegant style that still brings plenty of intensity. Black cherries, mulberries, dried violets, and loamy earth define the bouquet, and it’s medium-bodied, balanced, and finesse-driven on the palate, with ripe tannins as well as a terrific sense of salinity on the finish. Give bottles 3–4 years and enjoy over the following 15+. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
Tasted as a tank sample of the final blend, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau is a blend of approximately 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% other permitted varieties, with about 30% whole bunches used in the ferments. Marked by ripe cherries and hints of complex garrigue notes on the nose, it’s full-bodied but also really elegant, with fine-grained, silky tannins, ample concentration and a long, surprisingly crisp finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Enticing and pretty, this boasts a pure beam of raspberry, rooibos tea and singed garrigue, with notes of baking spices and dried lavender. A pretty yet substantial wine, with chalky tannins lining the finish. Vibrant and fresh, with good drive. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2032. 7,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

From an estate that seems to have hit another level over the past 5–7 years or so, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a deeper plum/purple color as well as charming, complex aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries, mulberries, peppery garrigue, flowers, and orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the more charming, mid-weight style of the vintage, has silky tannins, wonderful overall balance, and outstanding length. It’s not going to match the top vintages from this estate, but it’s going to put a smile on your face any time over the coming 15 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The entry level release from Chapoutier, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Bernardine (80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre) shows the supple, charming, pretty style of the vintage and has medium-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe cherries, framboise, and peppery herbs. This rounded, forward, front end-loaded beauty is perfect for drinking over the coming 7–8 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine is full-bodied, concentrated and well-structured. Mingling aromas of cooked strawberry, raspberry jam, crème de cassis, licorice, dried herbs and a dash of mint. There’s a touch of heat on the long finish, undermining the freshness. (Nicolas Greinacher)

A dense, powerful red, with a vein of graphite coursing through sappy black fruit and melted licorice. Shows charred sandalwood and a bitter kick of herbs and iodine that offset the ripeness, with tannic grip through the smoky finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2035. 1,600 cases made, 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

A blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve marries hints of dried flowers with black cherries and a touch of cocoa. Full-bodied and concentrated, this is less flattering to taste than the Les Olivets at this stage, but it should still be excellent in time. (Joe Czerwinski)

A destemmed assemblage of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from a parcel of wines located just 800 meters from the winery, the 2020 Cotes du Rhone Beatus Ille offers a bit of the Ferrando magic for a lower price than the Châteauneufs. Floral notes join raspberries and cherries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and fine, finishing long, with hints of caramel and roasted fruit.

The 2020 Côtes du Rhône Villages Terre d’Argile, which comes from vines just north of Châteauneuf du Pape, is always a stunning Côtes du Rhône. In fact, there’s not many better out there. The 2020 shows the pure, lively style of the vintage as well as classic cassis and raspberry fruits supported by toasted spice and floral notes. It’s medium to full-bodied, balanced, and clearly an outstanding, impeccably made wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A stylish red, with impressive polish to the flavors of cassis and red licorice highlighted by dried anise, vanilla and singed alder. Boasts snappy acidity and silky tannins, which nicely frame the lush palate. Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2026. 3,500 cases made, 750 cases imported. Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. For all this wine’s richness, it’s energetic as well, showing solid, spice- and floral-driven persistence on the finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is ruby/purple-hued and has the classic translucent color of the domaine. It’s more precise and focused than the Télégramme and will need more time, but it offers a complex, gorgeous bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed stone, wild fennel, and ground pepper. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, do your best to hide bottles for 5–7 years and it’s going to keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
