Domaine Giraud Grenaches de Pierre Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020 / 750 ml.

Everything’s in perfect harmony in this floral, stunning red. Offers plum, cherry cobbler, incense and lavender supported by a line of racy minerality, savory earth notes and cooling, mouthwatering acidity. This has real energy driving the length, with black tea and potpourri accents all seamlessly adding layers. Stunning. Best from 2025 through 2040. 70 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Still in concrete at the time of my visit, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre looks to be another prodigious effort. Gorgeous aromas of stone fruit and ripe cherries mingle easily with intricate notes of garrigue and pine needles in a wine that’s somehow full-bodied yet ethereal on the palate, with a long, tart, almost cranberry-ish finish. As always, it’s sourced from old-vine Grenache in the sandy soils of Pignan, Charbonnière and Mourre de Gaud, all clustered northeast of the village of Châteauneuf du Pape. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD95+95–97+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Also beautiful, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre is all Grenache from cooler, sandy soils, and it’s raised primarily in foudre and tank. Black raspberry, cassis, spring flowers, wild strawberries, toasted spice, and graphite all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a layered, flawlessly balanced mouthfeel, brilliant tannins, and a great finish. It’s up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and should be snatched up by savvy readers. (Jeb Dunnuck)

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Juicy in feel, with a compact, well-built core of blackberry, black currant and plum paste flavors, infused liberally with licorice snap and apple wood notes. A tarry hint underscores the finish, though the fruit stays dominant and driven throughout. Very solid. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2021 through 2038. 200 cases made, 90 cases imported.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
The two special cuvées are some of the gems in the vintage. The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes comes from one of the great sites in the southern part of the appellation and is just about all Grenache (there’s some very old vine Syrah, which struggles in this hot terroir). While not up to the out of this world 2016, it has a beautiful bouquet of cassis, kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, garrigue, and peppery herbs. Deep, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins as well as loads of character. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN94+94–95 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Youthful violet. Highly perfumed, sharply detailed aromas of black raspberry, cherry liqueur, floral oils, smoky minerals and exotic spices. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate; sweet red and blue fruit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors display a suave marriage of power and finesse. Delivers a serious punch of flavor but comes off lithe. The floral and mineral qualities linger on a sappy, wonderfully long finish shaped by smooth tannins.
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
More tightly coiled than last year, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes now seems more herbal than floral, with greenish streaks running through the crisp red berry fruit. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Syrah from the lieu-dit les Gallimardes, the Syrah spent a year in new oak, while the Grenache aged in tank. It’s full-bodied yet taut and racy, but it should relax in a couple of years and then drink well for at least a decade.

JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
Lastly, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre offers slightly more purity and elegance, yet certainly doesn’t come up short on power or concentration. Stunning black cherries, currants, underbrush, ground pepper, and earthy, rocky mineral notes all give way to a deeper, darker, rich, concentrated wine that’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age. It will see its 20th birthday in fine form. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
Drawn from sandy soils in the lieux-dits of La Crau and Pignan, the all-Grenache 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre features wiry, herbal threads sewn into a fabric of tart cranberries and raspberries. It’s full-bodied and tannic, needing a few years to loosen up. Ultimately, it should reward the patient with a complex, silken tapestry of flavors.
VN94+94–95 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Deep shimmering ruby-red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, exotic spices and candied flowers, and a smoky mineral nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Alluringly sweet and open-knit, offering juicy Chambord, boysenberry and lavender pastille flavors, along with hints of star anise and bitter chocolate. Smooth and seamless in texture, showing superb finishing energy, harmonious tannins and sharp delineation.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
This is packed with steeped raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors, laced with hints of mulling spice, incense and rooibos tea. The fine-grained finish reveals alder and garrigue echoes. Shows a lovely mouthfeel throughout and latent depth on the finish. Best from 2021 through 2036. 200 cases made, 90 cases imported.

Same Region, Same Vintage, Same Grape
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Boasts bitter plum, raspberry and black cherry reduction notes that have a lively savory, garrigue streak, while grippy-edged tar, tobacco and ganache notes pepper the finish. Muscular and dense but the cut is there, and the fruit core takes a late encore for good measure. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2025 through 2040. 500 cases made, 56 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD95+95–97+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
As always, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) is a more powerful, mineral-laced wine, offering a fabulous nose of cassis, blackcurrants, ground pepper, Provençal herbs, and cured meats. This full-bodied, concentrated 2020 has incredible purity of fruit, silky yet building tannins, and a great finish. It should round into form with just short-term cellaring and have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A destemmed assemblage of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from a parcel of wines located just 800 meters from the winery, the 2020 Cotes du Rhone Beatus Ille offers a bit of the Ferrando magic for a lower price than the Châteauneufs. Floral notes join raspberries and cherries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and fine, finishing long, with hints of caramel and roasted fruit.

RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Sep 2023
On this visit, I slightly preferred the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Guigasse to the Le Grand Pin. Also 100% whole-cluster Grenache, it’s much the same, but maybe a bit less floral and a bit more concentrated. Roses, herbal tea, blackberries and black cherries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and almost airy in feel yet with intense, lingering flavors. Just terrific stuff. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Guigasse is cut from the same cloth, with a big, spicy bouquet of ripe black cherries, Asian spice, Provençal garrigue, and sappy flowers. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, and a seamless texture. It’s a big mouthful of classic Southern Rhône goodness that can be drunk today or cellared for 10–15 years. As with the Grand Pin, this is all non-destemmed Grenache that comes from the La Guigasse lieu-dit (also sandy soils) and is brought up all in used demi-muids. (Jeb Dunnuck)

All the 2020s showed beautifully at this address. Black raspberries, peppery herbs, garrigue, and graphite notes all emerge from the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône, a medium-bodied, rich, structured wine that has plenty of structure and depth. It will keep for 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Beaucastel’s 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is shaping up as a blend of 30% each Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 10% each Counoise and Syrah, plus 20% other permitted varieties, including a healthy proportion of white grapes. Complex and red-fruited, with hints of flowers and garrigue, it’s expansive and richly textured on the palate, finishing long and silky. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape was scheduled to be bottled the week after this tasting, and it’s the usual blend of 35% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Counoise, and other permitted varieties. While the estate compares this to their 2016, it reminds me slightly of their 1990 and has a wonderful perfume of red, blue, and black fruits, as well as sappy garrigue, saddle leather, and ground pepper. It’s beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, has a good sense of freshness, and fine tannins, as well as a tight, focused style on the palate that bodes well for longevity. It deserves 7–8 years of bottle age and should be long-lived. (Jeb Dunnuck)
