Domaine La Barroche Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018 / 750 ml.

The base cuvée from the young, passionate (and incredibly talented) Julien Barrot, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot checks as a blend of 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre, and the balance a mix of other permitted varieties. Partially destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudres, demi-muids, and a small portion in stainless steel, it has a great nose of red and black raspberries, framboise, spring flowers, and peppery garrigue. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it displays a notable sense of elegance and purity, light yet present tannins, and a great finish, all making for a terrific base cuvée that I would be happy to drink any time over the coming 10–12 years or so. Concentrated and dense, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot delivers scents of black cherries, black olives, mocha and hints of dried spices. It’s evolved quite a bit since I tasted it at the estate last year, becoming richer and more tannic than many other examples of the vintage. It shows surprising heft on the full-bodied palate and a long, velvety, chocolate-tinged finish.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

An oak-aged blend of Grenache and Syrah, the 2018 Cotes du Rhone Villages Sainte Cecile Gabrielle boasts ample notes of bay leaf, thyme and sage on the nose, backed by ripe cherries and hints of mocha. It’s a medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured wine that drinks well now and should continue to do so for another 4–5 years.

The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (only 30% destemmed) is more powerful than the Chaupin cuvée and has a rocking bouquet of blackberries, cassis, scorched earth, graphite, and licorice, that develops beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and layered on the palate, it has integrated acidity, present yet ripe tannins, and a beautiful finish. Pure class, it’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark violet. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red/blue fruits, incense and exotic spices, and a floral accent builds as the wine opens up. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering lush black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that are energized by a core of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and solid, spicy thrust on a long, sweet finish framed by velvety tannins.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Showing nicely, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes shows the softer, elegant style of the vintage yet still has ample depth of fruit as well as a classic profile. Notes or red and black fruits, peppery herbs, nori, licorice, and scorched earth all give way to a full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2018. It’s already hard to resist, with silky tannins and no hard edges, and it says weightless on the palate. It’s not going to be the longest-lived version of this cuvée but it’s going to put a smile on your face anytime over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Another top-notch vintage for this property, the 2018 Lirac Domaine du Clos de Sixte looks as if it may rival the 2016. It’s 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, aging in concrete (70%) and barrels (30%). Floral notions mark the nose, while flavors of raspberries and apricots appear on the full-bodied palate. This seems creamy-supple at first, with steadily building tannins on the lengthy finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

This red puts on a gorgeous display of racy cassis, cherry puree and raspberry coulis flavors laced with garrigue and singed sandalwood accents, while a mouthwatering mineral edge drives underneath. The long finish lets the fruit play out, adding flickers of tobacco and shiso leaf. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Best from 2022 through 2038.
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
Richer and more concentrated, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier offers an incredibly layered, elegant, yet also powerful profile. Plenty of dark fruits, bouquet garni, pepper, and some meaty notes all define the bouquet, and it’s as seamless and silky as they come on the palate. It’s going to benefit from just short-term cellaring and will keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Also Grenache dominated yet blend with 15% Cinsault, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier gives up a brilliant and complex bouquet of red and blackberries, Provençal garrigue, lavender, peppered meat, and baking spices. Rich, full-bodied, and with another level of concentration over the classic cuvee, this is another incredibly classy, seamless, flawlessly balanced wine that does everything right. It’s certainly great today yet has building tannins and is going to evolve for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Limpid ruby-red. A highly complex, mineral-accented bouquet displays Chambord, incense and baking spice qualities, and a suave floral nuance builds with air. Stains the palate with lively, sharply delineated red berry liqueur, lavender and spicecake flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. In a vibrant style, finishing spicy and very long, leaving notes of candied flowers behind.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
Usually the most ethereal and perfumed of the cuvées at Saint-Préfert, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier lives up to that billing yet again, with floral notes that suggest rose petals and violets, delicate hints of dried spices and Provençal herbs and plenty of red-berried fruit. It’s full-bodied but almost lacy in feel, with a fine, silky texture and a long, elegant finish with a surprisingly tannic edge.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
This cuvée is always on the perfumed side, as it usually includes a fair dose of Cinsault. The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is 85% Grenache and a full 15% Cinsault, and while it delivers darker fruit flavors than the regular cuvée, it also blends in floral, garrigue-like notes with the ripe black cherries. Full-bodied and silky, it should drink well on release and for at least a decade after that.

JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
The star of the show in 2018 is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous and it has an incredible mix of complexity, power, and elegance that’s something to behold. Sporting a deep purple/plum color as well as a killer bouquet of blackcurrants, lavender, peppery garrigue, graphite, and white chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, multi-dimensional texture, incredible tannins, and a gorgeous finish. This is a good as 2018 gets and while it’s already impossible to resist, it’s going to evolve for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–98 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
Deeper colored, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous is a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Vaccarèse and Cinsault. Incredible notes of blackcurrants, graphite, candle wax, white flowers, and pepper garrigue all emerge from the glass, and it has both complexity and intensity. With fabulous purity of fruit, full body, a tannin quality that’s just about off the chart, and a killer finish, it’s one of the most polished, seamless vintages of this cuvée I can remember. It’s going to shine with just short-term cellaring yet also age gracefully on its flawless balance and length. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Opaque ruby. A powerfully scented bouquet displays mineral-accented boysenberry and Chambord scents complemented by suggestions of pungent flowers, Indian spices and incense. Intense red/blue fruit preserve, cherry cola and fruitcake flavors show superb definition and silky texture. Comes off graceful despite its depth and finishes on a repeating floral note, displaying outstanding persistence and bright, mineral lift.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
As almost always, this cuvée is a big step up in concentration. The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous comes from vines planted in 1905 and is roughly 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarèse. Intense red berries accented by orange zest and dried spices appear on the nose and palate, which is full-bodied and velvety.

This delivers a big burst of juicy raspberry and boysenberry purée flavors, lined with dark licorice and pastis notes while roasted applewood and fruitcake fill in through the juicy, yet focused finish. Excellent underlying energy throughout, with a long bolt of graphite giving it all support. Best from 2024 through 2038. 250 cases made, 135 cases imported.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The Syrah-heavy 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Fiancée (55% Grenache and 45% Syrah) was brought up 50% in foudre and the rest in demi-muids. It’s another dense, rich 2019 offering building tannins and structure as well as a beautiful nose of red and blue fruits supported by lots of peppery, meaty, spicy nuances. This rich, concentrated effort stays light and balanced, with good freshness and remarkable purity. I’m generally not a fan of the Syrah-heavy releases from the Southern Rhône, but this will make a believer out of anyone. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The classic release from this great estate, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot is 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties. Black cherries, blackberries, graphite, peppery garrigue, and ample chalky minerality define this beauty, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a wonderful mid-palate, building structure, and outstanding length. It’s a great 2019 that needs 2–4 years of bottle age to integrate its structure but will have 10–15+ years of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
