The classic release from this great estate, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot is 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties. Black cherries, blackberries, graphite, peppery garrigue, and ample chalky minerality define this beauty, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a wonderful mid-palate, building structure, and outstanding length. It’s a great 2019 that needs 2–4 years of bottle age to integrate its structure but will have 10–15+ years of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. For all this wine’s richness, it’s energetic as well, showing solid, spice- and floral-driven persistence on the finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is ruby/purple-hued and has the classic translucent color of the domaine. It’s more precise and focused than the Télégramme and will need more time, but it offers a complex, gorgeous bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed stone, wild fennel, and ground pepper. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, do your best to hide bottles for 5–7 years and it’s going to keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre brought up in tank, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône La Dame Rousse is a big, rich, powerful Côtes du Rhône loaded with notions of smoked black cherries, licorice, scorched earth, and ample minerality. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Southern Rhône that has terrific purity of fruit, ripe, present tannins, and a great finish. I love its balance and it’s going to deliver ample pleasure over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah aged in 50% new oak) is similarly deep purple and offers a straight-up stunning bouquet of ripe cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with chocolate, Asian spices, cured meats, and new leather. A powerful, concentrated, rich 2019, it has a great mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is top notch, and while it’s unquestionably a modern style Châteauneuf, the oak is nicely integrated and I suspect will disappear completely with 5–6 years of bottle age. Deep violet. Oak-spice- and mineral-tinged aromas of ripe cherry and black currant are joined by garrigue and floral notes that build in the glass. Alluringly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy red and blue fruit preserve, succulent herb and licorice flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. A vanilla nuance emerges on an impressively long, penetrating finish firmed by gently chewy tannins.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
Although matured in 50% new oak, a core of pristine black cherry and cassis flavors entices in this blend of Grenache (50%), Mourvèdre (30%) and Syrah (20%). Supple in mouthfeel and accented by dustings of cocoa powder and Christmas spice, it finishes with charry, gripping tannins. Approachable already, the wine should improve through 2035.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Warm in feel, with a gush of plum puree and blackberry paste flavors, liberally laced with black licorice and roasted alder notes. A solidly built, modern version, with a nice tug of warm earth on the back end. Best from 2022 through 2034. 700 cases made, 280 cases imported.

Starting off the 2019 barrel samples, the 2019 Gigondas reveals a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a rich, powerful, medium to full-bodied and concentrated style that carries lots of classic dark fruits, ground pepper, and scorched earth-like aromas and flavors. This rich, dense 2019 will reward 3–5 years of bottle age and have two decades of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Also a true gem of a wine, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes includes all three terroirs of Charbonnière, Esqueirons and Galimardes and is all Grenache. It’s a ripe, opulent, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with notes of raspberries, blueberries, Provençal herbs, violets, and flowers. It’s a big, exuberant Grenache offering sweet tannins, a broad, mouth-filling texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022
This is marked by a gorgeously pure core of kirsch and raspberry reduction flavors, which are laced with rooibos tea, singed balsam wood, dried anise, garrigue and warm stone notes. Extremely long, with a singular focal point to the finish as everything is pulled together by finely beaded acidity. A terrific wine. Best from 2025 through 2040. 480 cases made, 120 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes boasts a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a heavenly nose of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, flowery incense, and both red and black fruits. Delivering incredible elegance as well as full-bodied power, it offers silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Two to three years of bottle age are going to be warranted, and it’s going to have two decades of overall longevity. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape in the making!

The base cuvée from the young, passionate (and incredibly talented) Julien Barrot, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot checks as a blend of 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre, and the balance a mix of other permitted varieties. Partially destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudres, demi-muids, and a small portion in stainless steel, it has a great nose of red and black raspberries, framboise, spring flowers, and peppery garrigue. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it displays a notable sense of elegance and purity, light yet present tannins, and a great finish, all making for a terrific base cuvée that I would be happy to drink any time over the coming 10–12 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
Concentrated and dense, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot delivers scents of black cherries, black olives, mocha and hints of dried spices. It’s evolved quite a bit since I tasted it at the estate last year, becoming richer and more tannic than many other examples of the vintage. It shows surprising heft on the full-bodied palate and a long, velvety, chocolate-tinged finish.

This delivers a big burst of juicy raspberry and boysenberry purée flavors, lined with dark licorice and pastis notes while roasted applewood and fruitcake fill in through the juicy, yet focused finish. Excellent underlying energy throughout, with a long bolt of graphite giving it all support. Best from 2024 through 2038. 250 cases made, 135 cases imported.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The Syrah-heavy 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Fiancée (55% Grenache and 45% Syrah) was brought up 50% in foudre and the rest in demi-muids. It’s another dense, rich 2019 offering building tannins and structure as well as a beautiful nose of red and blue fruits supported by lots of peppery, meaty, spicy nuances. This rich, concentrated effort stays light and balanced, with good freshness and remarkable purity. I’m generally not a fan of the Syrah-heavy releases from the Southern Rhône, but this will make a believer out of anyone. (Jeb Dunnuck)
