Slightly more lifted and perfumed than the Domaine du Pere Pape, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Crau De Ma Mere offer lots of red and blue fruits, violets, flowery incense, and peppery garrigue notes and it just screams of classy Grenache. With beautiful complexity, medium to full body, silky tannins, and a great finish, it’s a stunning example of old-vine Grenache to enjoy over the coming 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The full-bodied 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape la Crau de Ma Mere is an assemblage of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, all aged in foudre. Ripe, rich and full-bodied, it delivers waves of chocolate, mocha and black raspberries, finishing long and velvety.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is one of those wines that’s hard to describe as it seems to change every time you come back to it. Offering a more translucent ruby hue as well as a smorgasbord-like array of blackberries, black raspberries, violets, Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, flowers, and smoke, it’s a dream wine in every sense. All Grenache from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit, brought up in used demi-muids, it hits the palate with flawless balance, a powerful, full-bodied mouthfeel, perfectly ripe tannins, and a gorgeous finish. As with the other cuvées here, it has the fruit, texture, and balance to offer pleasure today yet is going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is going to be one of the wines of the vintage. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more.
RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum — a 100% Grenache cuvée (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids — looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It’s full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it’s a gentle one relative to the wine’s overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it’s close.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is based on 45% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre, with the balance Syrah, all destemmed and raised in 55% new French oak. Gorgeous cassis, violet, graphite, fruitcake, and peppery herbs define this brilliant effort, and it’s full-bodied, with a pure, seamless texture, wonderful tannins, and one heck of a great finish. This magical 2019 is going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age (it’s brilliant even today) yet keep for 20 years or more. Châteauneuf du Pape lovers need to have this in their cellar! Always the densest and richest of the cuvées at this benchmark estate, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes features scents of cedar and mocha layered against a backdrop of black cherries. This actually is a bit like Black Forest cake—that ripe, rich and dense, with chocolate and vanilla shadings—but remains dry and savory in the end, with velvety tannins and tremendous length. It’s approximately 50% Grenache (aged in tank), plus 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah (both aged in new barrels). (Joe Czerwinski)

Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the Côtes Du Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin always shows the style of this estate as well as the vintage, and the 2019 is well worth seeking out. Black cherries, gravelly earth, spicy herbs, and violet notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, floral, seamless Côtes du Rhône that does everything right. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Boysenberries, blueberries and hints of redder fruit emerge on the nose of the 2019 Cotes du Rhone les Claux, a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a plump, generous feel and a silky texture accompanied by a gorgeous sensation of freshness and lip-smacking acidity on the long finish.
JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
I loved the 2018 version of this wine and the 2019 Cotes Du Rhône Les Claux is certainly cut from the same cloth. Based on a mix of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, its deep purple color is followed by a rich, meaty, Provençal wine that has lots of mulled red and black fruits, notes of black licorice and black pepper, medium to full-bodied richness, and a clean, lengthy finish. This young, concentrated Cotes du Rhône is ideal for drinking over the coming 5–6 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Gigondas Classique Vieilles Vignes shows a touch of cedary oak on the nose — nothing obtrusive, but enough to notice alongside the black cherries and subtle garrigue notes. Full-bodied and generous, with a smooth, silky feel on the palate, it ends with a gentle wash of dusty tannins and an attractive hint of licorice.
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020
Moving to the three Gigondas I was able to taste, the 2019 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes comes from a mix of terroirs on the lower plain, around the estate, and is mostly Grenache brought up in larger, very old foudre and concrete tanks. Deep purple/ruby hued, with a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, candied flowers, and sweet garrigue, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky texture, great tannins, and plenty of length on the finish. This is a more finesse-driven, silky, elegant wine than past vintages and it’s going to drink nicely for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Matured entirely in concrete, this fresh-faced, exuberant red fills the palate with fleshy streaks of preserved red plum and red currant flavors. A velvet textured but crisply balanced blend of 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Cinsault, it’s irresistible for its youthful, juicy fruit profile but elevated too by hints of crushed basalt and a singe of black pepper on the finish. Drink now–2027 at least.

The young vine release from this great estate, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Calvaire has a beautiful Grenache nose of ripe strawberries and raspberries as well as notes of spice-box, garrigue, and flowers. This feminine, medium-bodied, seamless 2019 is balanced, lengthy, and already impossible to resist. (Jeb Dunnuck)
