The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is slightly darker fruited, more structured, and concentrated, with more tannins as well as awesome notes of black currants, smoked garrigue, ground pepper, and licorice. Complex, full-bodied, and incredibly polished on the palate, it’s another terrific wine from this domaine. Drink it any time over the coming decade or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. Mineral-accented blue fruit, baking spice and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and garrigue. Juicy, seamless and broad on the palate, offering boysenberry and cherry cola flavors that tighten up and become sweeter through the back half. Shows firm thrust and spicy lift on the sweet, energetic finish, which is framed by gently building tannins.
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The entry-level cuvée for the U.S. importer, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a bit richer and darker fruited than the regular CdP. Black cherries dominate, picking up hints of chocolate on the finish. It’s full-bodied, silky and lush.

The tiny production 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum comes from a single parcel in the famed La Crau lieu-dit and is brought up in demi-muids. Released only in magnum, it’s consistently been one of the most singular, brilliant expressions of Grenache in any vintage it’s been produced. The 2018 isn’t going to break that trend yet it checks in behind some of the greats such as the 2007, 2010, 2016, and 2017. Revealing a translucent ruby hue as well as a glorious bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, cured meats, candle wax, garrigue, and Provençal spice, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness as well as a seamless, Grand Cru Burgundy like mouthfeel that carries sensational richness yet so sense of heaviness or weight. With no hard edges, beautiful tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish, it’s going to drink beautifully over the coming 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
The tiny production 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum comes from a single parcel of very old vines in the La Crau lieu-dit and is brought up in demi-muids. Young and primordial, yet concentrated and structured, it has impressive purity, building tannins, and will certainly be a sensational Grenache. It’s more backward and unevolved at this stage compared to both the Combe Des Fous and Deux-Ex Machina, so readers are advised to give this at least a handful of years in the cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)

When I visited in June 2019, the selection for the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum hadn’t yet been done, so this is my first look at the wine. It’s marked by the new oak demi-muids, with layers of vanilla and cedar sitting atop luscious cherry fruit on the nose, and slightly drying wood tannins evident on the full-bodied palate and extending through the long finish. Personally, I prefer the less-obvious wood and nuanced complexities in the estate’s other premium cuvées in 2018, but there is no denying the hedonistic appeal of this 100% Grenache.

Incorporating 30% stems and brought up in foudre and demi-muid, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin is just a gorgeous wine that offers a perfumed bouquet of kirsch, blueberries, spring flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. It’s elegant and medium to full-bodied, with the purity of the vintage and a great finish. It’s not going to match the top vintages of this cuvée, but it’s going to drink spectacularly well in its youth and evolve nicely for 10–15 years.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Another wine that displays the vintage profile, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin reveals a translucent medium ruby color as well as pure Grenache notes of kirsch and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and toasted spice-like aromas and flavors. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. I’m inclined to recommend drinking this in its first decade of life, but I do love its balance and it has ripe tannins, so I expect it will actually evolve gracefully for a solid 15 years or more. It’s a pretty, elegant, classy wine that I would be thrilled to drink. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Brilliant ruby. A highly expressive bouquet evokes Chambord, cherry cola, smoky minerals and licorice, and a floral note builds as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and energetic in style, offering palate-staining raspberry, cherry pie and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight and become spicier with air. Delivers a suave blend of richness and finesse and finishes spicy, focused and very long, leaving repeating floral and red fruit notes behind.

Domaine Roche Cairanne 2018 / 750 ml.

JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
The 2018 Cairanne is another winner from the talented Romain Roche that should snatched up by savvy readers. Beautiful cassis and black raspberry fruits, notes of crushed flowers and violets, medium to full body, and a ripe, sexy texture all make for a quintessential Cairanne that’s going to provide tons of pleasure over the coming 5–7 years.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The raspberry and garrigue-scented 2018 Cairanne is an early-drinking charmer. Loaded with red berries, but with enough savory, herbal complexities on the long, softly dusty finish to keep it interesting, this medium to full-bodied effort may be drunk with pleasure over the next 4–5 years. (Joe Czerwinski)
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021
Hints of smoke, caramel and crushed stone accent plum and blackberry flavors in this wine. Made from 70% Grenache augmented by 25% Syrah and 5% Carignan, it’s an opulent, easy-drinking red with a fresh, mineral finish. Best enjoyed now–2025. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

Intense, with a Turkish coffee note out front before the core of steeped plum, black cherry and fig fruit starts to unfurl, while extra hints of singed alder, garrigue and warm earth develop, adding length and range on the finish. Delivers muscular power and perfumed grace that work together perfectly. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2022 through 2040. (James Molesworth)
RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud is the usual blend of approximately 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. It’s dark and rich, with flavors of black cherries and plums joined by hints of tree bark and perhaps even a bit of mushroom. Full-bodied and velvety, it’s powerful, concentrated and long on the finish, folding in subtle chocolate notes.
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
Moving to the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud, it checks in as 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre brought up in demi-muids. It’s a more structured wine than the Reserve Auguste Favier and boasts killer notes of ground pepper, graphite, spice box, and blackberries. With a huge core of sweet fruit, a layered, seamless texture, full body, and more concentration and depth than most in the vintage, it’s up with the top 2–3 wines out there in 2018. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Saturated ruby. Highly expressive, mineral-accented cherry and dark berry liqueur, cola, licorice and potpourri scents are complemented by an exotic spice nuance. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and more lively as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and floral lift and finishes extremely long and spicy, with steadily building tannins adding closing grip.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
Boasting the darkest fruit of the three 2018s from Saint-Préfert, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud delivers notes of black cherries and dark chocolate, plus hints of wintergreen, cassia bark and baking spices. It’s full-bodied but less expansive on the palate than the others, compact and dense without being heavy or overdone, and it’s framed by ripe but supportive tannins. Mexican chocolate and cola notes linger elegantly on the lasting finish.
JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Lastly, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud is a more Mourvèdre driven wine and is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, from 80-year-old vines, that was only partially destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. Ruby/purple-hued with gorgeous crème de cassis and black cherry fruits as well as notes of smoked meats, white chocolate, ground pepper, and candied violets, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, silky texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. As with the other 2018s here, it’s pure class. It can be drunk today or cellared for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
