When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Medium ruby in color, the 2021 Patelin de Tablas is a blend of 43% Syrah, 28% Grenache, 23% Mourvèdre and 6% Counoise. It has inviting aromas of blood orange, raspberry and pomegranate with touches of tar and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with a concentrated core of crunchy fruit and a long, floral finish. 3,900 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)

A wildly perfumed bouquet of earthy rose, white pepper and dried strawberries makes the 2021 Patelin de Tablas a total pleasure on the nose. Silky-smooth yet full of energy, this engulfs the palate in a pure blend of red fruits and spices, as sour citrus hints add contrast. It finishes pleasantly chewy, long and full of zesty tension. Residual acids keep the mouth watering for more. In 2021, the Patelin de Tablas has an elevated amount of Mourvèdre, at 33%, and a bit less Grenache, giving this a wonderfully spicy character. The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)

Precise and detailed, with handsome raspberry and dried cherry flavors that take on highlights of savory meat, licorice and black olive, finishing with medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 1,166 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Coming from multiple sites throughout the Central Coast, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a juicy, medium-bodied, nicely balanced style in its ripe cherry and plum fruit as well as notes of ripe herbs and chocolate. It’s a terrific value that brings plenty of classic Cabernet style and is perfect for drinking over the coming 2–4 years (probably longer, but why wait?). (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
The 2020 Fundamental Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium to deep ruby color and scents of baked cherries, thyme, milk chocolate and potpourri. The palate is full-bodied yet light on its feet, with lots of refreshing acidity, an alluring, supple texture and long, perfumed finish. Enjoy this easy-drinking Cabernet over the next year or two. (Erin Brooks)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Readers looking for an affordable Cabernet will flip out over the quality and value here. Ripe dark cherry fruit, plum, spice, mocha and licorice are all dialed up in this succulent, tasty Cabernet from Joey Tensley. (Antonio Galloni)
