The aromas fascinate in notes of raspberry, thistle, cranberry, blueberry, herbs and coffee. Plump, palate-coating flavors follow. There’s a lovely texture and purity to this wine, while it remains light on its feet. Raspberry and blueberry notes linger on the finish.

Lots of juicy berry fruits, briary herbs, pepper, and violet notes emerge from the 2019 Sinister Hand, Washington State’s take on a terrific Côtes du Rhône. Medium-bodied, balanced, and just straight- up delicious, drink this charming, balanced Syrah blend (there’s 18% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre with smaller amounts other varieties) over the coming 4–6 years. The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Gorgeous and ripe, the 2019 Grenache Third Man is a silky Grenache bottling that captivates the senses. Immediately gratifying on the nose, it shows off layers of ripe red currants alongside black tea, Asian spices, orange zest and cigar ash underpinnings. Beautifully textured, with great length and finesse, this outstanding bottling is already singing at the two-year mark. (Owen Bargreen)

An eclectic blend of 38% Sangiovese, 35% Zinfandel, 18% Blaufrankisch, and 9% Malbec, the 2019 Abbot’s Table spent a year in neutral French oak prior to bottling. Bright plum and wild strawberry fruits as well as flowery herb notes emerge from the glass, and it’s medium-bodied, with a beautifully balanced, elegant character, good acidity, and a great finish. Drink this pure, juicy, elegant red over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
