Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Tasted out of bottle, the 2020 Grenache Distenta II is total blockbuster stuff that’s darker and richer than the 2021. Red and black fruits, white pepper, classy leather, and spicy baking chocolate-like nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with gorgeous tannins and a great finish. The blend is 78% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah (with a splash of Viognier), and it’s going to knock your socks off any time over the coming 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a blend of mostly 78% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and a tiny splash of Viognier. It’s a ripe, sexy, insanely good barrel sample that has remarkable purity, tons of black raspberry and cassis fruits, perfect balance, full-bodied richness, and an already complex bouquet of violets, spice, and flowers. I continue to be blown away by what this estate seems to achieve with Grenache in just about every vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The recently bottled 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a blend of 77.9% Grenache, 9.4% Mourvèdre, 7.9% Syrah, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 0.5% Viognier. Fruit comes entirely from the Krankls’ estate vineyards: Eleven Confessions (40%), Cumulus (33%), The Third Twin (21%) and Molly Aïda (6%). It was made with 29% whole clusters, predominantly Grenache. “Ten years ago, I was afraid of whole clusters,” Manfred Krankl recalls. “Now, I quite like it, especially on Grenache, a little less so on Syrah.” Matured about 23 months in 52% new French oak and demi-muids, it has a deep ruby-purple color and blossoms beautifully in a decanter over several hours, particularly notable for its super-fine texture and detailed aromas and flavors. Its youthfully dense wild berry fruit unfolds to nuances of salami, powdered sugar, olive and potpourri as it airs in the glass. Medium-bodied with pixelated tannins, the palate is lighter on its feet than expected, boasting mouthwatering acidity, ethereal, layered flavors and detailed, spicy accents that fan across the finish. Around 1,630 cases and 600 magnums will be made, due to be released in the spring of 2023. (Erin Brooks)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2023
The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a dense, powerful wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol, licorice and cloves hits the palate. This rich, heady Grenache delivers the goods. In a vintage that was so hard for Grenache, Elaine and Manfred Krankl found the way to craft a memorable wine. All this needs is time. (Antonio Galloni)

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
The 2020 Grenache is absolutely brilliant, and unquestionably up with the finest examples of this variety out there. Based on 78% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah raised in 50% new oak, it has a kaleidoscope-like bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe strawberries, spring flowers, incense, and ground pepper, to name just a few aromatics. This carries to a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered, hedonistic beauty with velvety tannins, a powerful yet somehow still fresh and elegant mouthfeel, and a blockbuster of a finish. It will evolve for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Nov 2023
The 2020 Grenache is blended with 12% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. It comes predominantly from Andremily’s new Slide Hill estate, plus the Alta Mesa Vineyard and Larner Vineyard in Santa Barbara County and G2 vineyard in Paso Robles. It was vinified using 70% whole clusters, matured for around 21 months in 50% new French barriques and aged an additional year in bottle before release. It has youthfully dense blueberry, baked plum, cherry fruit and slowly opening accents of cardamom, lilac and olive. The full-bodied palate features highly concentrated, enveloping fruit, abundant yet pixelated tannins and just enough freshness to highlight alluring floral and spice tones on the long finish. 400 cases and a few magnums were produced. The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.

Not yet bottled but already incredibly impressive, the 2021 G2 will be Grenache-dominated but includes smaller amounts of Syrah and Graciano. It’s loaded with red and black raspberry-like fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy nuances, which carry to a full-bodied, pure, elegant red. It’s remarkably complex for such a young wine and has incredible tannins and a gorgeous finish. Don’t miss it. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A lush, sexy, forward beauty, the 2021 Heart Stone Vineyard is based on 31% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 21% Graciano, and the rest Mataro and Petite Sirah, with the blend shifting slightly due to replanting in the vineyard. As with all the ’21s here, it has a vivid purple hue as well as a great perfume of sweet red and blue fruits, spring flowers, ground pepper, and underbrush, but it’s on the palate where this beauty really shines. Layered, silky, and opulent, it’s not yet bottled, but my money is on this drinking nicely right out of the gate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Spiced black cherries, rum cake, molten chocolate and sweet sage form a bouquet that’s impossible to ignore as the 2020 Paderewski Vineyard opens in the glass. This is elegant to the core, with a creamy wave of ripe red fruits that flow under an air of violet inner florals. Chalky mineral tones cake the palate. It finishes with tremendous length and structure, as residual acids work to maintain freshness, and black raspberry hints slowly fade. The Paderewski is a co-fermented blend of 48% Syrah, 21% Mataro, 18% Zinfandel, 7% Graciano and 6% Tempranillo. (Eric Guido)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2023
Compact but deeply structured, this blend offers brooding blackberry, garrigue, river stone and savory pepper flavors that build weight and concentration on the finish. Syrah, Mataro, Zinfandel, Graciano and Tempranillo. Best from 2024 through 2030. 715 cases made. (Tim Fish)

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
The 2020 Heart Stone Vineyard is seductive in the glass, with a blend of crushed raspberries, dried citrus peels, sweet spice and lavender. This is elegant and graceful on the palate, with a wonderful lift to its depths of tart wild berry fruit. Sour citrus and balsamic tones add further tension toward the close. The 2020 finishes structured and long with a resonance of violette candies that linger. This blend of 33% Graciano, 31% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 9% Mataro, 5% Touriga Nacional and 3% Petite Sirah is built for the cellar. (Eric Guido)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
Densely structured and brooding, with deep blackberry and currant flavors laced with bitter chocolate, crushed stone and savory herbs as this builds tension toward full-bodied tannins. Hands off for now. Graciano, Grenache, Syrah, Mataro, Touriga Nacional and Petite Sirah. Best from 2025 through 2034. 686 cases made. (Tim Fish)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
The 2020 Heart Stone Vineyard is outstanding and has terrific aromatics of smoky black fruits, ground pepper, grilled meats, and assorted spicy nuances. Based on 33% Graciano, 31% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 9% Mataro, 5% Touriga Nacional, and the rest Petite Sirah, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, and the more focused, foursquare, firm style of the vintage on the palate. While it’s clearly not smoked, it is not at the same level as past vintages. (Jeb Dunnuck)
