Tardieu-Laurent Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Speciale 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 57998

SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022
Dark and a bit reticent still, showing a very deep well of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors scored by roasted apple wood and licorice root notes. Features serious drive on the finish, with a tannic spine that easily shoulders the load of fruit, while a subtle mineral note peeks through. This is built for the cellar. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is similarly deep purple hued and has a ripe, sexy style that’s very much in the vintage. Loads of black raspberries, Asian spices, candied flowers, and peppery garrigue give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful wine with terrific balance, plenty of ripe and polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a ripe, opulent wine that stays graceful and beautifully balanced. My money is on it benefiting from 4–5 years of bottle age, and it should have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of raspberry and cherry liqueur, incense and pungent flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet impressively lively as well, offering intense red and dark berry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate and show superb clarity and minerally lift. Closes extremely long, focused and lively, with silky tannins framing the wine’s sweet fruit. This is about as good as a "basic" Châteauneuf gets.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a ripe, classic, Provençal bouquet of black raspberry, strawberries, and darker berry fruits as well as spice, garrigue, and pepper. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, yet all about finesse and elegance, it’s overflowing with character and charm. It’s going to shine for 15 years with no issues. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a deeper ruby/purple color as well as incredible Provençal notes of peppery garrigue, dried flowers, and jammy red and black berry fruits. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a great mid-palate, loads of building tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and a big finish. This is one smoking good, classic cuvée that savvy readers should snatch up. It will have 10–15 years of prime drinking.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud includes a big chunk of Mourvèdre and is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was partially destemmed and brought up in demi-muids. If offers a deep ruby/plum color as well as a rich, savory, complex bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spice, cured meats, and graphite. The Mourvèdre really shows in this beauty, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, yet never loses its seamless, flawlessly balanced profile. It’s going to need 4–5 years of bottle age but will have 20–25 years of ultimate longevity. It’s another thrilling wine from this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud checks in as normal split of 60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up in used demi-muids. It’s a killer 2019 in the making and has lots of violets, peppery meat, and spice aromatics, loads of cassis and red currant fruits, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, building tannins, and the purity, intensity, and length that this estate seems to deliver in just about every vintage.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red-blue fruits, exotic spices and potpourri, all enlivened by a smoky mineral nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Sweet, chewy and energetic in the mouth, offering concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end lift. The mineral and floral notes build on an insanely long, penetrating finish shaped by emerging, polished tannins. This monumental wine was fermented in concrete tanks and raised in demi-muids.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2021
This is large in scale, showing off a range of cassis, red tea, crushed plum, warmed cherry compote, Turkish coffee, melted red licorice and warm earth flavors, all seamlessly layered and carried through a lush, yet focused finish. The warm earth note provides the ground wire in the end as the fruit takes an encore. Gorgeous. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2024 through 2040. 3,960 cases made, 330 cases imported.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah aged in 50% new oak) is similarly deep purple and offers a straight-up stunning bouquet of ripe cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with chocolate, Asian spices, cured meats, and new leather. A powerful, concentrated, rich 2019, it has a great mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is top notch, and while it’s unquestionably a modern style Châteauneuf, the oak is nicely integrated and I suspect will disappear completely with 5–6 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Deep violet. Oak-spice- and mineral-tinged aromas of ripe cherry and black currant are joined by garrigue and floral notes that build in the glass. Alluringly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy red and blue fruit preserve, succulent herb and licorice flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. A vanilla nuance emerges on an impressively long, penetrating finish firmed by gently chewy tannins.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
Although matured in 50% new oak, a core of pristine black cherry and cassis flavors entices in this blend of Grenache (50%), Mourvèdre (30%) and Syrah (20%). Supple in mouthfeel and accented by dustings of cocoa powder and Christmas spice, it finishes with charry, gripping tannins. Approachable already, the wine should improve through 2035.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Warm in feel, with a gush of plum puree and blackberry paste flavors, liberally laced with black licorice and roasted alder notes. A solidly built, modern version, with a nice tug of warm earth on the back end. Best from 2022 through 2034. 700 cases made, 280 cases imported.

A big step up, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a remarkable effort offering gorgeous black raspberries, garrigue, spice, and floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, pure, and balanced, with beautiful depth of fruit, it’s up with the top wines in the vintage. This cuvée is 90% Grenache and the balance Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with lots of stems, and aged in once- and twice-used barrels followed by a year in foudre. 625 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
Spicy hits of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon entice on the nose of this full-bodied, luminous red. An invigorating blend of Grenache (80%), Mourvèdre (10%) and Syrah (10%), it offers youthful blackberry and plum flavors etched by hints of lavender, sage and bramble. A lovely, unadorned expression of Gigondas best now–2030.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
The 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is 80% Grenache, with the remaining 20% split equally between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Two-thirds of the fruit was undestemmed, and the wine matured in previously used barrels for 10 months, then in foudre. It’s a top-flight effort, with soaring aromas of herbal tea and red raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in texture, with a long, vibrant finish that ends in a flurry of soft tannins.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021

The 2022 Tavel Vieilles Vignes (60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, and 10% Syrah) has a classic Tavel deeper ruby hue as well as powerful aromatics of framboise, candied strawberries, white pepper, and hints of Provençal garrigue. Beautiful on the palate as well, it has plenty of richness, medium body, and a clean, dry finish. A terrific Tavel, it brings plenty of richness while staying light on its feet and balanced. Plumes of red raspberry and plum announce this juicy, luminous blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre sourced from limestone and clay soils. It’s intensely fruity but nuanced by shades of charred wood, earth and bramble, too. Soft tannins welcome drinking young, but it’s a concentrated, foursquare sip that should evolve well through 2030.

Also deeply colored, the 2018 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes has rocking purity and freshness as well as tons of black cherry, blackberries, scorched earth, graphite, and peppery garigue aromas and flavors. It’s rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and just another beautiful wine. The blend is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that was two-thirds destemmed and will spend 10 months in once- and twice-used oak followed by 10 months in foudre. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2018 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, aged 10 months in once-used barrels, then eight months in foudres. For a Rasteau, this is remarkably fresh and vibrant, with red raspberries and spicy licorice notes on the nose and palate. It’s medium to full-bodied, open-knit and accessible, with hints of mocha and soft, dusty tannins on the finish.
