Intensely dark and lush in color, this is a classic Petite Sirah from Paso Robles, starting with unctuous aromas of cassis, toasted oak and baking spice on the nose. Comforting waves of cappuccino, fudge, mace and black cherry wash across the palate. (Matt Kettmann)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This wine is concentrated with aromas of blackberry, clove, toasty oak, violets and earth on the nose. The flavors on the palate are mulberry, black currant, pink grapefruit zest, dried herbs transmuting into tobacco leaf, espresso and grippy tannins. Decant for an hour and enjoy with grilled meats. WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
This widely available red blend satisfies in so many ways. Hearty aromas of thick, dark fruit, smoke and anise lead from the nose into a rich palate that’s loaded with cassis and violet. A persistent peel of acidity adds balance. (Matt Kettmann)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
The 2021 Pessimist is a blend of 75% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah, 11% Zinfandel, 2% Lagrein and 2% Malbec matured for 10 months in 60% new French oak. It has an opaque ruby-purple color and lush scents of cassis, blueberry jam, violet, lavender and hints of powdered sugar. The full-bodied palate is supple and fresh with gently candied fruits and a satisfying finish. This will be a crowd-pleaser. (Erin Larkin)

A dense color in the glass, this bottling offers toasty oak, roasted red fruit and charred beef aromas on the nose. There’s a fine tannic line to the palate, where boysenberry, pepper and toasted oak flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)

Item #: 61855

WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2023
This relatively recent proprietary red-blend creation continues to impress each vintage, showcasing Paso power with deft balance in pleasing ways. Aromas of blackberry jam, violet extract and root-beer floats proceed from the nose into a comforting palate of strawberry, cola and peppery spices. Firm, lingering tannins lead through the caramel-laced finish. (Matt Kettmann)
