View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2020 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain A Minima bursts with aromas of berries, plums and cherries. Medium-bodied, rich and hearty, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe tannins, it has turned out nicely. As usual, it’s a blend of equal parts Gamay and Pinot Noir, vinified without added sulfites. (William Kelley)

The 2020 A Minima, Trapet’s Passetoutgrain, is quite floral on the nose, transparent and quite earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly candied opening, lightly spiced with a twist of sour cherry on the piquant finish. Forward and simply a lot of gluggable fun. (Neal Martin)

The 2020 Morgon Bellevue Sable mingles aromas of cherries and wild plums with hints of violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and satiny, with succulent acids and melting tannins, it’s charming and seamless, standing out as one of the most demonstrative, immediate wines in the range. I love the expansive and expressive nose of wild blackberry with a touch of forest floor. Ripe, concentrated and fresh on the very focused palate. Very long finish with so much mineral freshness for the warm vintage. Excellent aging potential! Drink or hold.

Deep violet color. Displays candied red berry, smoky mineral, potpourri and star anise qualities on the incisive nose. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering mineral-accented raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of botanical herbs. Finishes spicy and very long, with lingering florality and harmonious tannins. (Josh Raynolds)

The 2020 Morgon Château Gaillard derives from a one-hectare parcel of old massal selection vines located within the climat of Douby and in its first year of organic certification. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, plums and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with ripe but youthfully chewy tannins and a long, sapid finish. It’s a fine addition to the domaine’s range of singularly age-worthy Morgon bottlings.

The 2021 Morgon Côte du Py is excellent, offering up aromas of cherries, plums and berries mingled with notions of peony, burning embers and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s seamless and succulent, with melting tannins, lively acids and a long, precise finish. After the richer, more powerful 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages, the 2021 marks a return to a more classically proportioned style, even if Burgaud did a great job of avoiding excess and maximizing the potential of those riper vintages.
