Having been ridiculed (unfairly, in our opinion) in the movie, "Sideways," Merlot sometimes gets a bad rap as a beginner wine. We respectfully disagree. The Merlot grape, like many, can make fine wines for daily drinking as well as the best Merlots, sought out by collectors for their fine pedigree. Many of today's best-selling red blends contain Merlot as their backbone and some of the highest priced wines in the world (Château Pétrus in Bordeaux, for example) also use Merlot.

Merlot is versatile, which is why you'll find it planted in both warmer and cooler climates around the world. Besides Bordeaux, Merlot is also produced in the US, Australia, Chile, and elsewhere.

So here is an ode to Merlot. We know you well, and though we do not always sing your praises, we must give you your due as one of the greats.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#52269

    RP90+90–92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019
The 2018 Marjosse is made up of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc with a splash of old Malbec. Big old barrels were used for 25% of the crop. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with a compelling nose of baking spices, raspberry pie, warm red and black currants, rose hip tea and fragrant earth with a waft of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate is filled with fragrant red and black fruit, framed by great freshness and soft, supple tannins, finishing on a floral note.
    VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2018 Marjosse offers lovely black currant and raspberry aromas, fresh and vibrant in the glass; plum jam and black olive notes emerge with time. The palate is underpinned by fine tannins, good substance and a crisp, cedar-tinged finish that is a pure joy. A must-buy from Pierre Lurton’s home estate.

  11. Château La Prade

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53106

    RP91+91–93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019
The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 La Prade delivers pronounced baked cherries, mulberries and blackberry pie scents with nuances of rose hip tea, iron ore and fragrant earth. Full-bodied and richly fruited with loads of earth and floral sparks, it has a plush, velvety frame and provocative lift to the finish.
    SP90+90–93 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Quite ripe, with dark plum and boysenberry notes, but this is focused, offering subtle spice and tobacco hints on the finish. Tasty and should be a great value. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. 2,208 cases made.
    JS90+90–91 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 11, 2019
A very accessible, almost delicate young red with blackberries and blueberries and some black-olive character. Medium body, light tannins and a fresh finish.
    VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2019
Nicolas Thienpont’s 2018 La Prade is supple, juicy and inviting. Ripe red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice all run through this racy, super-expressive wine. These limestone-rich soils give a wine with notable energy, tension and aromatic lift, along with an element of tightness that needs time to resolve itself, all quite complementary in this vintage. The blend is 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.
    JD89+89–91 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 1, 2019
Made from 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château La Prade comes from more limestone soils in the Francs region of the Côtes de Bordeaux. The property was purchased by Nicolas Thienpont in 2000, and it lies on a limestone plateau, covering around seven hectares. It offers a classy, balanced, yet structured and fresh style that’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring. Red plums, black cherries, licorice, and scorched earth all flow to a medium-bodied, elegant red that’s going to be a terrific value.
